Turns out there's two solutions to the "don't offend anyone" conundrum - you can just piss off everyone equally and get the same result...

The book is highly entertaining if anyone's here interested! Though without giving anything away, I do think there are some aspects that the movie handled better

"the dude from The Menu" was very funny, thank you for saying things as they pop into your mind in an authentic way. It's fun to hear the way you share your thoughts, especially when they differ from my own internal monologue.

Hey Frank! Here is my understanding of the outcome. The Pope knows he is dying and wants to ensure that the new Pope is actually the best person for the job, so he strategizes and immaculate plan to ensure this happens. He has three candidates he supports Bellini, Lawrence and Benitez. He'd prefer Benitez wins but of course he needs a plan B AND plan C!
1. He ensures that Cardinal Lawrence is the leader of the Conclave because he knows he will do his best in the role and he is also a prime candidate even if he doesn't know it.
2. He doesn't tell anyone about this mysterious Mexican pope because he doesn't want anyone to have the chance to dig up his past and try to ruin his image.
3. The pope discovers Tremblay's misuse use of funds, instead of confronting him, he asks him to secretly bring that Nigerian nun.
4. He tells that other guy that he fired Tremblay even though he didn't. He did this because he knew it would come out and sew discord.
5. He has the nun from Nigerian show up and cause a scene with Adeyemi because he knows that will also sew discord and lose him the vote.
6. That head nun is also in on it and is working in the background to make sure things go to plan, I'm confident she knew Lawrence was digging around in the room and that she is also the person who planted those documents in Lawrence's room in the headboard.
7. When Lawrence's publicly confronts Tremblay about his crime, Tremblay adamantly states that he wasn't fired by the Pope and that the Pope asked him to bring the Nigerian nun. He's telling the truth! But it doesn't matter anymore because everyone already sees him for the liar and cheater that he is. If he's capable of stealing church funds for bribes, then SURELY he's capable of sabotage!
8. Now, Bellini, Tremblay and Adeyemi are out of the running, leaving Lawrence and Tedesco as the main contenders, just as the final vote starts, the bombing happens...the bombing allows Benitez to deliver his moving speech and influences the conclave to vote for him. Now I'm NOT saying the Pope coordinated a terrorist attack before his death because it simply would not have been possible to time it so perfectly... so I'm just gonna say it was divine intervention!
The Pope played chess with this entire Conclave and won even from the grave! In the very beginning Bellini says that the Pope aways won their chess matches because he was always 8 steps ahead. That line sets the stage for the events of this story.

So very true! God forbid a woman should enjoy sex. And beyond the sexual behavior....still today when women see a doctor for certain symptoms, they are often told "it's all in your head" UGH!!

“Hysterectomy” and “Hysteria” share a root word for a reason: Women were diagnosed with hysteria, often because of their sexual behavior (such as having too much enthusiasm, even in the marital bed.) Women’s sexuality has long been treated as a mental defect

Frank, your revelation about the origins of homophobia in colonized Black populations made me shiver. I’m an old white woman who spent most of my life in the South and I thought I knew a lot about racism but I learn new things all the time, from books like King Leopold’s Ghost, The Warmth of Other Suns, and Caste; and from my Black friends - one of whom said to me when I asked why her older sister didn’t go the university where my friend and I met in the 1970s, “Seriously? There were no Black students allowed until the year I was a freshman.” I had no idea.
Fellow white people, let’s all listen and learn and hope that history isn’t fully erased by MAGA.

I keep typing out a long-winded version of my own religious deconstruction but it just keeps getting convoluted, so I’ll just say thank you for speaking on it, Frank. It really hit home, as I had my own journey of questioning and deconstructing, and it definitely took some time.

Absolutely. Part of the humor in the movie is exactly how mundane and petty everyone is, while tending to the highest spirituality. The solemnity of the rituals crumbles down in the face of the clumsiness of life: the ring doesn't come off, the cafeteria has cliques, the collars are rumpled, the outer world comes crashing in and demanding attention. Love it.

I really loved this film!
The Knives Out comparison seems apt, and I had never made that connection.
I love that the message is, at the end of it all, that the future of the church must embrace all genders.
A critic commented that the last shot of the movie being women, at the dawn of a new day, was quite significant.

There are many reasons to watch this film. The most important I took from it was that the film included the discovery by the audience that a character is intersex. He explained so well that he learned of his intersex condition during a routine surgery for appendicitis. He ultimately decided to accept his natural state, believing he is "what God made me". The film uses this revelation to explore and challenge the topic of gender identity and the Catholic Church's views on inclusivity and acceptance within the traditional gender roles of the Church. So timely, yet overdue.

Well it could have by proxy. Cardinal Dolan could have been influenced by Trump or other extreme right wing politicians throughout Europe. When they said the American was chosen my heart sank because his was the only American I had heard before then. I didn’t know about Prevost.

I'm not christian, I've never found a place for religion in my life, and I know this movie has both religious and non-religious people alike with mixed feelings, but I love it so much. Something about the commentary of one of the oldest traditions in the world juxtaposed with modernity and the politics of the process despite the cardinals insisting it's wholly spiritual. I just love the mean girls vibe of it all not to mention after the claustrophobia and tension of it all, the hope with Vincent's election, the blinds lifting and the nuns outside talking and laughing. It's just so beautifully made but somehow not at all what you expect.

Statistically one in every 10,000 babies are born intersex in my day they used to be referred as hermaphroditic, meaning born with both sexual organs and as infants born like this to the 50s 60s 70s Even they didn’t tell the parents they did surgery on the baby and it was based on What sexual organ presented itself the most visually applicable. My cousin went to high school with a young man who had to be rushed to surgery when he was 13 years old, they did an ultrasound and found he had internal bleeding, but they couldn’t define where it was. They opened his abdomen and found a full uterus and ovaries he was having his period. The doctors had told his parents at birth that he was intersex. He had both full functioning organs and the parents chose the baby to be a boy, but they did not remove his female organs. They gave him monthly shots of testosterone somehow it didn’t work to suppress the female hormones. He almost died of sepsis nowadays it would seem with all of our technology in medicine and genetic engineering, etc. there are more able to discern which organs are the most functional. In my small town we have two openly intersex members whose families chose to keep both of their children’s organs intact, allowing for them to grow up to be who they were always meant to be indigenous peoples call them two spirits one is a loving father. The other is a loving mother. They accept themselves as they were born and in this small Alaskan town, where everybody knows everything about everyone the love and acceptance of these beautiful people imperfectly made perfectly There are so many indoctrinated human beings that cannot accept the idea that these wonderful babies will grow up to be healthy, loving community members, and choose to be ugly to these beautiful genetic miracles. I find it so disheartening for all those beautiful children who had no choice at birth then to be mutilated so that they can fit into society’s narrative of a binary, black and white, low intellect and high contempt. These immoral people have no compassion yet they will walk into the house of their religion, not praising their God for his wonderful creations. I am so grateful for the generations coming, who see, advocate, and are not performative in their compassion and solidarity for their fellow human beings, no matter how they present themselves. It is with a light heart that I have been blessed with time a precious thing that many do not get or take for granted. And as we have evolved and evolved in the pendulum that swings from light to darkness, bending the ark towards a balance between humanity and in humanity, I find your generation miraculous and so much finer than the generations that came before you. You are the light bringers with the courage and conviction to usher in a world that is inclusive, and will rise to demand the rights for the world to be peaceful, loving because you are the change the world needs. No matter where you live in this world you all have the power as long as you choose life, light and honor over the darkness of the universal challenges that were laid thousands of years before you.

A side note on the irony of Tedesco's name. It means German in Italian. So, the racist, xenophobic cardinal is himself a descendant of foreigners in Italy.

CONCLAVE!!!!!! This is the first ever filmed media I've seen that has positive representation for an intersex person. Benitez having a uterus and seeing himself as whole, just as God made him, is HUGE for my community.
I'm intersex (in a different way than him, but there's over 40 ways to be intersex), and last fall I did a report on intersex representation in media that left me depressed for weeks, oops. And then this movie dropped literally weeks after I finished that!! 95% of all intersex infants born in the USA are subject to corrective surgeries with the assumption that we'd hate our bodies on principal for being "wrong", so this movie blew me away. BLEW me away.
Thank you for watching and enjoying this film, I love it so, so so much.
