I joined for Haunting of Hill House and I have stayed every month !! Midnight Mass, The Good Place, Fleabag, I May Destroy You, Anne, Interview with the Vampire, Hannibal, all such good shows I’m so glad you have reacted or are reacting to !! I can’t wait for what’s to come, I’m sure you know how much we all appreciate you, doesn’t matter if we’re not a massive community, we’re all as grateful as millions would be!

Camila

You are for real treating us with so many new, excellent shows that it’s hard to keep up! I’m only halfway through the episode now, have to work in the morning so I should go to bed (it’s almost midnight). But will definitely be continuing tomorrow. I love the books, must have read them more than 10 times when I was younger. It’s been a while now, probably way more than 10 years since I last read them. I knew about the series but I have never watched it before cos I was scared that it would not live up to my expectations. So many awesome books have been ruined by shitty adaptations. But after watching IWTV and loving it possibly more than the books, I have gotten more open to giving book adaptations a chance I guess. I love that they’re using the source material so much and really capturing the story and the characters exactly like the original. But I’m also loving the modern take on bringing the heavier themes at the front too. Thank you for watching this, I don’t think I would have thought to watch it otherwise but I’m already so glad I did!

I’ve been thinking of joining your Patreon for a while since you’ve been reacting to some great shows and I really like how much thought you put into your discussions. I saw you were reacting to Anne with an E and Our Flag Means Death and I was like ‘well, I guess today’s the day!’ Wonderful show - so glad you’re loving it already!

I read Anne of Green Gables when I was a little girl and this movie has done it such great justice! I am so grateful to have voted on this YouTube poll! I am so happy that you are enjoying it Franklin!

Laura Thate

Loved this episode. Fantastic watch

Hammerface1

To answer the question about the word "queer" - generally used to mean strange, odd, or unconventional I've been pleasantly surprised twice this week -- I am so happy with how much you love this and especially how much you love "Succession."

Melissa

I decided to watch the first episode because of the high praise Frank gave it. I thoroughly enjoyed the first episode. Thanks, Frank!

My boss is gonna think my eyes are puffy cuz I’m stoned but I’ve just been crying all morning watching this damn episode… and I’m also stoned.

Jordan Barnes

The acting is definitely part of the reason this show hit so hard. The world is so immersive, the costuming is fantastic, the writing and pacing are wonderful, but without the believable acting it wouldn’t be what it is.

Relating to the conversation @18:15 about how much Anne speaks, may I present an article from an 1897 Harper’s Bazaar magazine titled, “Women’s Speech” which I recently read while researching fashion. “ Women in general -to their credit be it said- are anxious to be attractive. It is their instinct in all conditions and in all surroundings, as may be seen in savage tribes … They overrate personalty and underrate mentality - that part of it especially which belongs to speech. As a rule, they talk enough - more than enough, perhaps but are indifferent to how they talk. They rattle on-words, words, words -without reflecting on their tone, their pitch, their precision, or their cadence. They do not sound to themselves as they sound to others. Most of them, in fact, are either virtually deaf to their own tongues, or so enamored of them as to be altogether uncritical - as to admire whatever they say, howsoever they say it.” So yeah…. nothing has changed.

Jordan Barnes

Completely new show to me. Anne must get a happily ever after or the emotional devastation will be eternal.

Shane

When Anne looks up from the ground and say, “What does it matter?” I fucking lose it.

Jordan Barnes

I'm hooked

Franklin

lets goo🙏🏾

Franklin

I like that. Her Imagination was all she had. Even the scene where she was asked to be in her room, she did say Her Imagination keeps her company which I loved. And yes that episode has a way of just keeping you watching and wanting more. It's going to be fun

Franklin

GOSH YOU'RE FEEDING US, MAN. I adore this show. It's just striking, however many times I rewatch it - it feels like it's holding my whole body captivated. My heart hurts for Anne. I've always perceived her wild imagination as a coping mechanism and her undefeatable will to live. You can't physically bear to be always miserable, and that's just what her life was up until now. I love the way the show doesn't shy away from her trauma, because DUDE???? This kid is fucking fearless. I just know you'll LOVE all that comes next, but, obviously, no spoilers. It's an absolutely beautiful show and i love love looooove how human characters are. So so sooo excited to rewatch this show with you 🥹💚

As for the redhead thing, oof, there have been many negative stereotypes associated with red hair for a long time! Some are quite mild, like gingers being considered "fiery" and "feisty" as a baseline, but also sometimes considered angry and hot-tempered and redhead women were considered promiscuous by default. It was associated with witchcraft in Europe during the witch hunts, in Japan it was the hair color of wicked demons (so they were scared of white gingers when they arrived there), and I think some African countries also had similar notions in the past. But also, there's the "ginger stepchild" stereotype for unwanted kids, the "gingers have no soul" thing... In England they started a Kick A Ginger Day in 2008, inspired by South Park (sigh) that is still happening, ginger kids were considered the "runt of the litter"... that kind of thing. I should say, most of that nowadays is only annoying and absurd more than anything else. But back in Anne's time, freckles were considered bad imperfections, and because they tint darker in the sun, they were a marker of being working class and having to work outside (women used lemon, and vinegar and all sorts of remedies trying to get rid of them, it's also mentioned in Little Women and other books). Being thin was also considered a sign that you didn't have enough food and were poor, kind of the opposite of today! So Anne being thin, freckly and a redhead were all signifiers of her being poor, savage and "unpolished", basically. A wild creature. Notice how her clothes are plainer than Diana Barry's, and are darker colored and unadorned, while Diana is richer, so she can dress in white (because she doesn't work on the farm, she wouldn't get stains) and has lace and frills in hers. Marilla and Matthew also dress plainly in linens and wool, while Rachel the gossipy neighbor dresses a bit better, and the Barrys dress noticeably rich.

I have So. Many. Thoughts. about this show!!!!! I'm so glad you love it already! There's kindred spirits here indeed. It's really interesting how this show fleshes out the world a lot more than the book or the original 80s miniseries. The book is a lot more bucolic and things are left more implied, like the harsh realities of being an orphan at that time, the part where people were suspicious of strangers and often racist, and the realities of life were hard, children had to work, families were burdened, and adults were stern at best. In the book, that's not mentioned much, probably because people at the time already understood that's how it was. Amybeth McNulty, the young actress, is incredible. To me, she's the best Anne of all! Truly embodies the spirit of the character like no other. And what a character! Anne is a firecracker, and was such a comforting inspiration to me as a kid who also talked too much and had too much of an imagination and vocabulary. This is kind of an autobiographical take of the author, Lucy May Montgomery, so I'll discuss a little bit more when it's no longer spoilery, but oh, we're in for some great adventures! I'm so, so glad you loved it. I'm so seated for this!

Lola Lirola

I read the novels when I was quite young and couldn’t grasp alot of it haha! excited to experience this with you for the first time since i was a kid!

Maddy M

I always wanted to go there too. When I was a kid I was obsessed with the show Road to Avonlea and the books. So much so when I was pregnant 18 years ago I named my daughter Avonlea.

Pam R

How did I not know that this show was Anne of Green Gables??? I love Anne of Green Gables! This is great!!

ArcAngel

god Anne With An E is so good. Anne of Green Gables is one of those things that has been with me since I was a child. There was a cartoon and in particular a mini-series/movie series (3 movies) from the 80s starring Megan Follows as Anne. I love Anne With An E, but those movies in particular are probably my favorite Anne of Green Gables adaption. However, they're all so good and bring different things to the table! Prince Edward Island (Canada), where this takes place, is a place I have always wanted to visit purely because of Anne of Green Gables. The story told is so moving and beautiful, if you love it at ep1 you're gonna love it even more here on out.

minkit

You are very welcome

yessurrrrrrr

Franklin

Let's go🙏🏾

Franklin

I was over her bullshit from the first moment she was on screen 😒

Franklin

So so excited

Franklin

You are definitely correct Amber

Franklin

Damn that is rough

Franklin

Also, to answer your question. Yes, this is based off of a novel called “Anne of Green Gables” (it’s actually a series of books, but that’s the name of the first one.)

Tammy S

red hair in the past was associated with witchcraft or moral deviance. When I was younger I would hear comments like “gingers have no souls” and I think that came from the show South Park. 🥴

Amber Walker

I’m so happy you are watching this show and love it. I had a feeling it would be your vibe!

Amber Walker
