ouuuuuugh saw that ofmd was on the list and while i have a very complex relationship w it by now (cough cough season two) it was really dear to me for a long time. it;ll be interesting to see how much of watching i can stomach through your reaction, but wrapping up s1e1 i can say FUCK i missed buttons and i missed when stede had Potential (also Roach my baby my most important. I missed youuuuuuuuuuuuu) when you brought up the cosplay thing i was like YES THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! in all, the show has a lot of issues but that ensemble is fucking fantastic, both actors and characters alike. my absolute belovedsss looking forward to getting through your reaction!!

The whole ensemble cast is so wonderful. Once Blackbeard is introduced and you've gotten to know the characters a little better hopefully the show will pick up for you. Fun fact: the general outlines of the show are based on real historical figures and events. Stede Bonnet was actually a rich plantation owner who left his family and spent a ridiculous amount of money to build a pirate ship. He was one of the only pirate captains who paid their crew a wage, rather than just letting the crew have a share in stolen loot. He was called the Gentleman Pirate, and he was also an associate of the real Ed Teach, aka Blackbeard.

2025-04-24 23:47:07 +0000 UTCThis show's a bit of an uneven watch for me, but that definitely has me looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Personally, I think the premise is just a tough one to pull off perfectly. You've got a protagonist who's a rich 18th century colonist, based on a real-life plantation owner, who in this fictional world still pretty obviously must have enslaved people if you read between the lines. You then have him take up another role of authority over a diverse working class crew to live out his personal fantasy, with a lot of paternalistic overtones and having him share his more modern enlightened philosophies with them. It's easy to make a comedy out of that by leaning into Stede being pompous and ridiculous, but it's a lot tougher to pair that with centering the story on his self-esteem and wanting him to be sympathetic - which I think these two episodes do pull off moreso than not, mostly through having such a great supporting cast setting the tone for how to read him and having their own story moments away from him. The secondary characters are where this show shone for me.
