Forgive if this has been mentioned but I haven’t seen it in the comments and it’s obligatory: Our first time seeing Omar’s killer, Kenard, was as the kid in Season 3 after the stash house shooting saying “My turn to be Omar”

2025-04-15 03:58:39 +0000 UTCWhen i was a kid I heard or read the phrase "an ignominious death", what happened to Omar in this episode, and also Bodie's death last season, is the definition of it. A death so meaningless it is almost embarrassing/insulting. The Wire gives the view from within the culture, how urgent all that street business feels, then to show that in the end it is a world unto itself that is meaningless in the end. No songs or tales with be sung for them, just zipped up in a bag, in a cold room. Another number one male shot and the world keeps spinning. Then when you listen to how BD was reading McNulty, she is also making that same point from the other side. All the badge bunnies, shiftless cynical alcoholic cops, that Jimmy spends time with in lieu of his SOs won't be there when he dies. He drives himself crazy and literally corrupots his own purpose for a number on some spread sheet to go up, so a politician can get a better gig in "public service", but nothing actually changes. It is TOO real, and when I look at it too hard it is depressing as hell. Twas ever thus, and ever thus shall be.
