thank you so much! i completely agree with you. they’re such dynamic, fresh, flawed characters and it’s amazing to see how they’re handled on here. with claire, she just feels so real, even if we’re not always following her around. she might not share everything that’s going on in her life or with herself, but we can sense a lot of it just by watching the show and her interactions within the show. the same goes for fleabag.

2024-10-20 00:23:17 +0000 UTCDoing as well as can be expected. I’m old and tired, sweetheart. It’s winter in Alaska my 80th. They don’t get any easier. I wish they would but such as life. I woke up breathing today so it was a wonderful day!

2024-10-19 23:13:55 +0000 UTCTotally agree with everything you said. A lot of messed up characters here. Very big on the making them endearing part. A good example with the amazing conversation she had with the bank manager guy. His actions prior to that conversation did not make him likable at all. You got to give Atlanta a chance. It's surreal

2024-10-19 23:09:29 +0000 UTCOkay then. I wasn't tripping. She does it all with such a big smile and direct eye contact . Gracias Amanda

2024-10-19 23:08:38 +0000 UTCOh my goodness thank you so much for sending this video. I dropped everything I was doing to watch the whole thing and I was smiling the whole time . Small world Appreciate you. And yes every time I see something that my brain can't compute - you get a big old HELLOOO???😆
Franklin
2024-10-19 23:07:50 +0000 UTCAbsolutely. I definitely feel you on the cultural parts that didn't quite connect. Same here, as a Nigerian who did not grow up in the US - some of it didn't hit home as good as they intended. Still amazing

2024-10-19 23:00:07 +0000 UTC@lola totally agree. Very refreshing characters

2024-10-19 22:58:44 +0000 UTCAbsolutely love everything you said here. I think that is absolutely the case for her. Appreciate you're sharing

2024-10-19 22:57:59 +0000 UTCAbsolutely I've been seeing the ads for that show a lot. Maybe down the line we'll check it out

2024-10-19 22:56:00 +0000 UTCThey also worked together in the Solo Star Wars movie! (Phoebe is not seen, she plays the voice of a robot, but that's probably where they met.)

2024-10-19 22:19:13 +0000 UTCThis is the most insightful and poignant character analysis, thank you so much! Something I am loving about this show is how nuanced everyone is. Claire could have been the stereotype of a rigid, square older sister that Fleabag could bristle against, but instead we have someone with her own pain and struggle, that you've seen so clearly.

2024-10-19 22:17:52 +0000 UTClove how you mentioned something about how a friend of yours schedules her cries bc it immediately reminded me of one of my new favorite shows — shrinking — where a character does that as well! i think you’d enjoy it: the show has a lot of conversations and themes around grief and forgiveness and found family and love, with gentle humor, that i feel like you’d genuinely appreciate . it’s made by the same creators of ted lasso!

2024-10-19 21:01:44 +0000 UTCi think one of the reasons, or probably the most glaring one for me as someone who has seen women stay with men like martin or with men that don’t really nurture their side of the partnership, is that claire has lacked a good male figure in her life, especially from her father who seems so detached from his daughters. she doesn’t know what’s good or what’s wrong, or if these are things she simply should tolerate or not. i think on top of it, she probably feels incredibly alone, so of course she will stay with someone who doesn’t satisfy her in any way shape or form — her mom passed away, her father points 99.9% of his attention and focus towards their step-mother, and her sister is dealing with her own issues. we do see how fleabag tries sometimes, but it’s not always dependable. it’s probably difficult to really open up with someone after a while, especially for Claire. martin probably dug his way in in a moment when she was feeling especially vulnerable and alone and dug his claws in. now, it seems that it’s hard for Claire to let go. for her, martin is most likely the most consistent, present part of her life, and from what we’ve seen of her so far, she craves that consistency, most likely due to a lack of it whilst growing up. it also seems like she’s the oldest sister, so she probably had to grow up and take charge of things quickly, and with martin, maybe she sees him as someone she can depend on, even if he’s not the best choice. but again, it seems like she doesn’t have the best example of what a partner should be like anyway.

2024-10-19 19:58:26 +0000 UTCI love Atlanta. As an Irish person there were a couple of episodes that didn't translate very well just based on how culturally specific they were to specific things that happened in America. But I still love it so much. Such a great cast and really original.

2024-10-19 19:50:35 +0000 UTCIt's funny you mention Donald Glover and similar writing. He and Phoebe were meant to write the show Mr & Mrs Smith together, but it didn't work out. He did an intro tribute thing for her BAFTA in 2019: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUObaFAS4N8&t=2s. Gorgeous portrait in your background. Lastly, random, your "hello?" comment reaction is always so hilarious.

2024-10-18 22:50:10 +0000 UTCAnother great reaction! Olivia Coleman plays the Godmother so well. 99% of her statements are jabs and passive aggression, she’s relentless. Love to hate her and hate to love her.

2024-10-18 05:15:03 +0000 UTCI'm not sure I've ever been so repulsed by consensual sex as I am in this show. It's just... uncomfortable? Although that might just be my empathy for Fleabag and her not getting any quality love. Sad stuff so far. I really hope she finds some happiness/fulfillment as the show goes on.

2024-10-18 04:04:01 +0000 UTCI am so glad that you chose to play multiple episodes because they are so short. It helps the tempo stay consistent. Thank you for all your hard work Franklin. 💯 respect.

2024-10-18 03:23:27 +0000 UTCTotally valid point about a lot of the male representation in this show so far. Not to take from that point at all, but I think a lot of women feel that way about how we're generally represented in media (things are getting better). Though one thing I love about this show is that while many of the men come off as pretty terrible, the women are pretty terrible too 😂 but this writer has such a great way of making deeply flawed characters endearing. You mentioned Atlanta— I've never seen it but if it has a similar tone as this, i need to check it out!

2024-10-18 02:57:54 +0000 UTCI think Fleabag has been avoiding cuddling Hillary because she reminds her of Boo :(
