Doctor Who S02E01 - New Earth FULL REACTION

Damn, I never picked up on the parallel of Chip being modeled after her "favorite pattern" and the possible correlation of them having previously died in Cassandra's arms... That's fucking trippy.

Ah, the 2nd major appearance of the Face of Boe (not counting his tv cameo during The Long Game). Quite the fascinating and enigmatic character. Love his theme as well. Season 2 is when Murray Gold, the composer of NuWho's music, really gets into high gear, tho that's not to say his work in season 1 was shabby. Far from it, with themes like "Bad Wolf". But season 2 is when alot more iconic themes from the RTD era make their way into the show. I quite like, how Cassandra lives in a bit of a bootstrap paradox. There's the obvious of "the last time she was ever called beautiful" being when her future self came to her. But also small stuff, like the fact that Chip having Cassandra's favorite pattern on his skin and then dying in young Cassandra's arms is probably what caused this pattern to become Cassandra's favorite. Also, I can't remember whether anyone mentioned it back during the first appearance of Cassandra, but she is technically the first trans character in Doctor Who. Back in "The End of the World" Cassandra off-handedly says the phrase "when I was a little boy". Seeing as she was clearly a woman in her adult years, this would imply that Cassandra transitioned at some point in her life. Kinda makes Cassandra holding onto the memory of the last time she was called beautiful a tad bit more tragic, considering how trans people can struggle with their internal sense of beauty, through gender dysphoria. Interesting to think about.

Billie and David doing their Zoรซ Wanamaker (Cassandra) impressions was good. I think Billie did the best, as she got more of her vocal fry and general cadence.

Love the "bit rich" gag.

I liked the episode, it definitely had some... not so great effects like when they were falling, it had some rushed storylines but I thought it had some interesting concepts and I kind of liked the unexpected redemption and kind of sad ending for Cassandra, even if it was rushed. I thought Billie Piper was great playing the multiple roles of Rose, Cassandra being Rose and Cassandra, as was David Tennant when he was playing Cassandra. I also thought there were a lot of great lines in this episode like, "At last, I can finally get revenge on that little-" "Bit Rich coming from you" or "That piece of skin was taken from the front of my body. This piece was taken from the back." "Right, so you're talking out of your-" "Ask not" and "Go and play with a ball of string". I also like that they established that there's a secret that the Face of Boe has, to tell the Doctor about one day at there third and final meeting. Great reaction, I look forward to the next one.

This episode definitely hits different post Covid. Especially the Duke's assistant who was determined to break quarantine come hell or high water. A communicable cure is an interesting idea; even if the Doctor's technique for brewing it is pure fantasy. That would be great though. Need a flu vaccine booster? Just visit the pharmacist, shake their hand and you're good to go. The Cat people are a fun idea. For me it's another one of those things that makes me think, if you give humanity enough time to just keep advancing, how weird do we get? RTD's answer is usually, 'pretty fucking weird'. Apple grass? Sure, whatever the hell that is. Tree people? Okay. Cat people... why not? Because at some point in the future, some scientist gets bored and decides to combine their DNA with a cat. They don't get it right, right away, but keep plugging away until they get there. And it probably started with a joke about them wanting to get some.... ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ˜’ Friends... To get some friends... who are... pussycats...

Stargazer1682

I like that we get to see past characters from the previous season granted I hated the skin woman too but thatโ€™s a hell of a creative idea I canโ€™t think of another show that would do that , the ending they didnโ€™t have to make it emotional for a minor character but it was cool they did and now we got a tease of a mystery from the FACE of Bo & we did see him before he was at the party with the skin woman the Dr had a conversation with him shortly before Rose went exploring

I can no longer hear the line, "I hear him singing, sometimes, in my mind. Such ancient songs." without thinking of a meme someone made where it cuts to the "ancient song" stuck in Boe's head and it's, "All the single ladies, all the single ladies..."

In a fight for visual supremacy between practical effects and CGI, practical effects still win single handed. Why filmmakers and studios don't seem to grasp that, I don't know. Especially when you add on top of that the fact that the overreliance on CGI has overburdened the CGI industry, to where the effects houses can't properly keep up with demand and many regularly end up going broke trying; with the result being that effects houses often can't deliver the best CGI effects on a film in time for a film's theatrical release, so the effects in theaters look subpar. Then the effects houses will keep working on the effects to bring them closer to the expected standard in time for the home media release; but that usually doesn't bring them any extra money from the studios, which leads to burn out and bankruptcy, rinse and repeat... It's just so stupid. There's a time and place for CGI; it can be useful, but I refuse to believe practical effects for a lot of things, especially makeup, wouldn't be cheaper, quicker and generally easier - as long as you're not doing the ridiculously complicated makeup, like Jim Carrey as the Grinch or Mystique in First Class, where it's taking 9 hours to get into makeup...

The one thing that always stands out to me, is that the cats in this look more real than the cats in the Cats movie. How is it that a BBC show with a 2% budget of a Hollywood film, make more real looking cat people then Taylor Swift and Rebel Wilson trying to be cats? HOW!?

Just James, Patreon member, did you know (at Chip's suggestion) Cassandra uses Cockney rhyming slang in an attempt to impersonate Rose, using such colourful English phrases such as "Wotcha", "guv'nor", "apples and pearsโ€ = stairs, "boat race" = face, and "I can't Adam and Eve it" = I can't believe it. This is the first Doctor Who episode to have an accompanying Tardisode. These short prelude scenes were made available online and via mobile phone a week prior to the broadcast. In the case of New Earth, the Tardisode consisted of a faux commercial advertising the Sisters of Plenitude's (the cat nurses) services. Rose suddenly has her hair up at the end of the episode and wears a cap in the opening scene, to hide the fact that Billie Piper is still wearing her hair extensions from The Christmas Invasion. Billie Piper didn't know she was going to be hit with water in the lift, Russell T Davies kept it in the final cut as he thought it was too funny to cut it. Speaking of which Billie Piper's then-boyfriend, Amadu Sowe, inadvertently damaged the Face of Boe prop, causing filming to be interrupted. We last saw The Face of Bo in The Long Game and before that The End of The World to be fair I did not recognise him either as this was the second episode I saw with the jovial David Tennant, it must be so weird seeing him as a menace in Jessica Jones and having him be completely different here. Rose and a half from me. Toodle pip.
