Since you loved this one, and you love Catherine O’Hara (and rightly so!), I REALLY hope you watch Wild Robot. It’s absolutely beautiful.

Fred Willard is such a scene stealer: no matter how small his role is, he is usually one of the most memorable characters in any movie.
He’s a great embodiment of the quote:
"There are no small parts, only small actors"
But then, that could be said about virtually every actor in ‘Best in Show’.

I show dogs, and would be happy to explain how it works and answer some of the questions you raised. Yes, the judges do feel the males, they are checking to ensure the dog is intact (dogs which have been spayed or neutered can not compete) and that both.. "friends"... have descended correctly. In some dogs one "friend" can stay retained up into the body, and that would be an eliminating fault/issue. To answer your question about comparing: the dogs are not compared to each other, rather they are compared to the written Standard for their breed. The breed standard details what the ideal dog of that breed is (structure, proportions, temperament, coat, etc are all included). While there is a level of individual interpretation on the Judge's part, it is not as subjective and opinion based as this movie makes it sound. The judges have to be trained on that breed standard, and then approved, to judge that individual breed. Best in Show judges have to undergo that process for every individual recognized breed. You and your dog start the show by competing against your own breed. The dog which most closely matches the breed standard is named Best of Breed. The dogs named Best of Breed for each breed then go on to Groups (Herding, Hound, Sporting, Non Sporting, Toy, Working and Terrier: that you saw in the movie) to compete against the other Best of Breed winners from their own Group. The dogs that most perfectly matches their breed's standard in each group are named the Group Winner. The Group Winners then go on for Best in Show.

Also - each of the Christopher Guest movies are primarily improvised-Guest gives the actors an outline & overview and trusts his ensemble to do the rest. (Waiting for Guffman is also brilliant- Dog Shows/Community Theatre /Folk Singers he never punches down - they are great.
