Why was there a bell dinging every 30 seconds or so the first half of the movie?

You have watched "It Happened One Night," which was released on 23rd, Feb. 1934; "The Thin Man" was released on 25th, May 1934, so it is not quite the oldest movie you have seen. Both Myna Loy and William Powell were known for dramas before this film. They were put in a movie called "Manhattan Melodrama" (the film John Dillinger saw just before being shot by the FBI) and were so funny making snide comments to each other that it was decided to take advantage of their chemistry to take a straight detective story and make their relationship funny while keeping the plot serious. It was very successful. Porter Hall, who played the lawyer, also played the "psychologist" Sawyer in "Miracle on 34th Street." Maureen O'Sullivan, who played Dorothy, was best known for playing Jane in the Tarzan movies. Just before this film, she had been in "Tarzan and His Mate," often thought of as one of the best and most controversial Tarzan films.

Nick & Nora Charles!!! This takes me back to the old "late, late show" era when broadcast tv would play old movies late at night like 1AM or 2AM. I miss those days.
