In general not many humans would get attached to a Xeno in the city, they're strange and not very common in the first days.
This changed a little in the Project Prime comic universe.
You could see some big Custus dogs guarding key spots or entrances, several mice colonies silently working around the factories, small lizards hidden around the city fixing places nobody wanted to go or just keeping maintenance.
Custus gamma, the pet variant of Custus were a last use to this invention, and rarely seen.
Producing a Xeno in lab weren't as cheap, but the procedures made them easier to create with time, cheaper and the conditioning methods were perfected to a point in which most Xenos would obey humans without questioning it much.
This process wasn't 100% success rate and some Xenos managed to keep or develop personality traits, these ones if detected were just closely studied and action was taken just when necessary... Xeno society and interaction in a group usually were enough to keep the odd ones contained, as they usually did what expected.
if not, there was always the chance of further studies in The Void.
