Increased resolution?

Hi there!

When I started creating Peasant's Quest I didn't know much about the RPG Maker engine, so I went with the max resolution it allowed. Which is 816x624. This was also a bit kinder to my PC when it came to rendering images. Now-a-days I have a far more powerful PC and I know how to override the resolution cap. So I've been considering increasing it to 1248x720. This should make images sharper and increase your view range on maps.

The downside is it'll take a little longer for me to render the images, and I'll need to do adjust some of the maps to fit the new format. The map work shouldn't be too substantial since it's only necessary on some of the smallest maps. Another downside is that existing images will be surrounded by a black border, unless I end up re-rendering them. Which isn't likely, since it would take me hundreds of hours.

I have also considered going 1920x1080, but that just isn't feasible with the equipment I've got at the moment, and it might exclude several devices.

What do you think, should I go for a resolution increase, or would I just be wasting my/your time?

Old images can be re-rendered when you decide it's time to finish the game (hope very distance event)

Thanks Luke:-)

For what it's worth I'm against the idea, the game is perfect as it is.

You'll see a bit more of the map around you. If you are used to playing full screen, it will appear a little more zoomed out. But not much since the height is only increased by 96 pixels. But you get a lot more width. If you usually play in window mode, you can just stretch the window to compensate. Or you can buy a larger screen:-)

I don't quite follow... You mean increase the size of images for 5$ patrons? Because I don't think I can increase the images in game without increasing the overall game resolution. But I'll check.

Tinkerer

Images will take approximately 50% more space. So expect the game to grow by about 150-200MB per update (now it's about 100-150MB)

I imagine this will also make us zoomed even more out, in an artistic sense creating more of a distance between the player and the MC. I know, this may seem like nitpicking, but it's something that bugs me when playing RPG's. Once a certain distance is reached, the immersion is kind of ruined (for me). It becomes more about optimizing numbers, than being on an adventure. Should it merely be regards to the images, then I think it's fine. Well, to the degree it doesn't impeed your work all too much with bugs or insufferable long render times.

I dont think you should increase the rez of the game itself and instead increase only the rez of the main higher quality pics

I don't mind waiting longer. Quality over Quantity always wins.

Working our way up to 4k. What will this mean for file size though?

Honestly I would like to see the change to 1248x720, even with the extra wait time involved and the black borders. I think it would be a benefit for you going forward and maybe even attract more people? But in the end it is up to you, I would play it either way! ^_^
