Mushoku Tensei Episode 8 Reaction

A MANA BOMB JUST DROPPED?!

Comments

That guy that showed up right before the mana bomb went off said a line that’s confusing on a first watch. He said he just needed to kill Rudy. I’m thinking it had nothing to do with Rudy being important to the story or us the viewers, I think it’s because there was some crazy magic happening and this boy was holding a fancy staff while standing right beneath this thing in the sky. That guy in white looked around, saw Rudy, and was like “good enough, I’ll kill him and see if it fixes things”

As others have said, the anime focuses purely on rudy's perspective and cuts any and all monologues and lore that rudy himself didn't learn that's in LN. It does nerf world building quite a bit but it also actually improves anime in some places, especially in early season 2. In some cases knowing other perspectives might hurt feeling or seeing rudy's point of view the way he does. So the way anime chooses to do story telling is a nice way to let audience fully understand how rudy feels because anime makes you feel exactly same way. basically, you're meant to know what's going on through rudy's eyes, vs the LN which is told in a more overlord perspective where you know EVERYONES point of view. That said, if there is something you need to know later, you learn it when rudy would naturally learn it vs the god/overlord reader point of view the LN does. With that in mind, I hope most will be careful about spoilers in comments that anime will likely bring up later. However, there is some stuff that's cut purely for brevity like lore on how fighter aura works or world politics that world build but don't nessesarily matter to rudy's story that some of us will probably bring up along way. Oh, a lot of side character stuff gets cut too later on. That will be worth explaining and that's also likely again left out for anime due to usual cuts and not gonna stuff they're just saving for later.

Not only that. her parents in general feared for their daughter ending up with a bad man or at mercy of another noble house. They both saw rudy as a way to secure Eris a better future for herself and the boreas line as a whole. When you look at it that way you realize yeah it's messed up to serve up your daughter the way they both tried to do, you realize it was out of love and protection from what would happen with someone that wasn't rudy.

Fun fact: It was actually her mom that sent her to Rudy's room, not her dad. Her mom knew that with how Eris is, she was very unlikely to find a partner for marriage, and since Rudy didn't seem like he'd be opposed to her, she was sent in to hopefully seal the deal lol

Unfortunate

I mean, it seems like Eris also does like Rudeus. It looks like he's the first guy around her age that was able to be around her for many years and deal with her violent ways. She also looks up to him and admires him because he is her teacher and she also says to Rudeus in the previous episode that she thinks he can do everything.

Yeah, there are also a lot of politics that are going on with the Boreas family in specific and inside the Asura Kingdom in general that are only very briefly explained in the anime. But it's actually not explained on purpose, as the story is told (as much as possible) from Rudeus perspective and he has no clue because no one actually explains this to him in detail. Paul mentioned it when he spoke with Zenith that he ran away from home and considering Paul's personality and Phillip seriously offering a political coup that would entail killing other family members, we can get a glimpse of how cutthroat noble society in the Asura Kingdom really is. Offering their children as hostages or political bargaining tools in marriages seems to be pretty basic in that regard (things that have been done a lot throughout human history).

And so, the true story begins ^^ So looking forward to your reactions :D

TURNING POINT 1 HAS ARRIVED. Good theories. As for Eris, her circumstances are a lot more complicated than the anime really delves into. She does have a lot of things going on in her head having to do with political interactions. In Feudal politics, daughters were often used as political pawns to be married off as prizes. It's the unfortunate reality and this phenomenon is core to the Asura Kingdom's politics as well. As awful as it sounds, in those times any girl who hit puberty was seen as ready for the deed so yes sometimes it happened as young as 10-12. Also marriage and sex was intrinsically tied, the marriage wasn't considered official until the couple had slept together in many cultures. For a sneak peak at Eris's situation that the anime doesn't really reveal but is revealed in the LN at this point (and might come up again in later seasons potentially, so I won't reveal too many specifics) think of how much value a girl like Eris would have politically. Girls aren't meant to be able to fight, they are meant to be pure and kind and obedient. Would any other potential political alliance actually want her? We've already seen a hint of what the nobles think of her during her birthday party. Think of how that constant pressure would affect someone as well as what kind of future awaits someone like her. Most "princesses" or noble daughters were fated to marry off to some older man that they have no love for in exchange for influence, money, or military protection. Those kinds of relationships were rarely happy ones. Just something to think about
