People sometimes ask me if I’ve ever had a bad sauna experience. I wouldn’t really call this one bad… more like unusual, a little funny, and definitely memorable 😅 It actually reminded me how people can look out for each other even in the middle of a hot, steamy night at the sauna ❤️
So, here’s the story.
In Finland, we have this special place called Sompasauna. It’s run by volunteers, totally free, and open all year round. Anyone can just show up, heat the stove, and jump in. There are a few different saunas there, and the whole vibe is community-based, kind of donation-supported. Sometimes it’s quiet, sometimes it’s packed with people warming up on a chilly evening.
One night I was there when it was a bit colder outside. The line to get in was long, and while waiting I ended up next to a guy who was clearly tipsy 🍺 Alcohol isn’t really encouraged in places like this... sure, a “sauna beer” is part of the culture, but heavy drinking is another story.
This guy didn’t really speak the same language as me, but he tried chatting anyway. I smiled, answered a little here and there, but mostly kept to myself. He wasn’t rude, just drunk, and I didn’t feel unsafe… though I realized later I could’ve drawn my boundaries more clearly.
When it was finally my turn to go inside, I thought I’d left him behind... after all, he wasn’t even there to sauna. He had this big winter jacket on and was just hanging with his friends outside. But to my surprise, he followed me straight in… coat and all. People gave him these funny looks, like “dude, you don’t wear an overcoat in the sauna.”
I couldn’t find a free spot on the benches, so I sat down on the steps to warm up. That’s when he suddenly leaned in and tried to kiss me. I told him no, don’t touch. He tried again, and I said no again. Luckily, other people around noticed right away and stepped in. A couple of guys asked him to leave, and eventually he did.
Honestly, it didn’t feel scary at the time, more like awkward and a bit surreal. Still, it showed me how being friendly isn’t the same as inviting someone closer. And it reminded me that I, too, can practice being clearer about my boundaries.
In the end, I was just grateful for the community vibe ❤️ that people saw what was happening and made sure I was safe. No harm done, just another sauna memory… one of those stories you laugh about later while cooling off by the water 🌊🔥
