Rogue-Like Update 03/24/2020 (cheating)
Added 2020-03-24 07:21:48 +0000 UTCSo, I've gotten a lot of messages over the past build saying something along the lines of "console commands don't work." Well, they never have. At least not in the native public releases. But Renpy is fairly easy to mess with, and those who wanted access to console commands could probably seek them out, and I don't think it's even possible for me to make that impossible. I figured this was as good a time as any to gauge the patrons' interest in cheat commands, and to give my thoughts on the matter.
I'm not morally opposed to cheat codes or anything, I mean I was using Game Shark a ton back in the day, but I do think it's a good idea for the game to separate "cheating" from "normal play," so that players feel some pressure to "earn things the right way." I feel like if the urge to cheat is too strong, then I've done something wrong in balancing out the game (and I understand that the money balance in the game can be hard to feel right). I feel like the fun of unlocking new options is a driving force in the game, and also that earning things at the expected pace keeps things from piling up in strange ways.
That said, if the community wants it, I am open to the idea of leaving the dev console open by default, accessed by hitting shift-d, or of building a basic "cheat menu" from which players can select various options. I already have one that I use for my own testing purposes, but I don't include it in the release versions (it's a little messy so I'd want to clean it up a bit). A basic cheat menu would let you adjust money values, core stat values, maybe toggle certain unlocks, adjust clothing more automatically, etc.
I do want to stress that this could impact bug testing. If people are messing with cheats, adding clothing that they hadn't earned, getting stats to a certain level too soon, that sort of thing, it might cause some errors that could never be found if they were playing the game in proper order. That's fine, but I would need to know, if you report that a bug occurred, I might need to know that something was tweaked. Of course this isn't all bad, since I could also ask you to type in certain commands that could help me narrow down an issue easier. It just takes a little of the magic out of the process.
That said, for those that can access the console commands, any old codes you know should still work, they are just a bit different now. Any commands that were "P_Something" will now be "Player.Something", any that were "R_Something" or any of the other girls will now be "RogueX.Something" or "EmmaX.Something".
And no, I won't be making the cheats only available to higher-tier patrons, because then pirates would get that build anyway, and then only the lower-tier patrons who were playing things honest would get screwed, and that doesn't help anyone.

What are the commands?
2020-11-17 01:55:20 +0000 UTCin the final game yes, have the cheats as an unlockable achievement, but until you have a game where the old saves will work without a lot of issues(errors) the cheat system is necessary right now. im only using console to get back to where i was before the next update. since the old saves do not work.

2020-04-20 20:53:07 +0000 UTCI agree that any cheat menu should have some unlockable criteria. Maybe something like unlocking after you reach full stats with all of the girls?
GlidingTurtle
2020-04-13 16:00:36 +0000 UTCWhile I agree with people having the OPTION to cheat, I do think there's something to be said for earning everything. So, maybe make the cheat options unlockables, by achieving max stats with each girl? Or maybe make them related to your relationship status? (Like by becoming their master?)

2020-04-05 04:58:24 +0000 UTCImpossible to say. :D Different people play different ways, and the best odds of getting good feedback are to have everyone play their own way, and if they stumble onto a problem, hope that they report it so that I can fix it. Some people would definitely "play it straight" even with cheat options available, but it would reduce that number.
Oni
2020-03-31 11:46:46 +0000 UTCI wouldn't say that including cheats necessarily takes away the abillity to play the grind. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing how the interactions have changed and how I can abuse the mechanics (like, in past versions, slapping a girls ass without losing time, like 50 times) to "speedrun" to sex. Cheats wouldn't change that, since cheating becomes boring very quick. But I understand your concern, some people would definitely not take the time to play this way anymore. The question here is: Would people who want to skip everything normally give feedback?
Klony
2020-03-30 10:14:30 +0000 UTCYeah, sure, I keep trying to add that in bits and pieces over time. Like as a small example, I added the possibility of other girls showing up while you're having sex with someone, and for situations to occur. I tend to lean more towards adaptive and systemic options over directly scripted ones, but I do slowly add those over time as well, and keep my mind on adding more.
Oni
2020-03-30 07:29:09 +0000 UTCIt's only the scene with Laura.
Oni
2020-03-30 07:25:17 +0000 UTCThere are 2 scenes with Gwen? I thought there was only one.

2020-03-30 05:23:29 +0000 UTCI did not mean a literally ending, but maybe you could add more story context to each girl or add more random events, like for example if you are on a date with a girl, there would be a small chance that you met another girl during it. It could add some variety to the gameplay.
2020-03-29 06:08:58 +0000 UTCThat was basically an April Fools gag last year, and that's all there is to it, for now. She was in the running to be the 5th girl added, but Jean won this time, so maybe she'll have better luck in the Girl 6 poll.
Oni
2020-03-28 05:44:57 +0000 UTCWell, I don't want a "finale," I don't want some arbitrary reward for "maxing all the girls," because 1. I don't want you to *have* to work with girls that you don't want to, I want that to be a player's goal, not a game-established goal, and 2. if I did have such an "ending," then it would be a bit obsolete once the next girls shows up. So what content I do add will be based on each girl individually, and maybe a little that plays off of having a few girls together or something, but I'm not doing a whole "well now you have all the girls, so Galactus attacks and you fight him off together! THE END!" scenario. The end is when you get bored and stop playing it. :D
Oni
2020-03-28 05:43:58 +0000 UTCMight be fun, I'll keep the idea in mind. I do have Jean's intro written though.
Oni
2020-03-28 05:41:02 +0000 UTCjust a quick question, i only got 2 events where the new girl gwen pops in and has a funny dialog and then ive never seen her since is this all for now and she will be fully in the game in later builds or do i need to do something special to unlock more content with her?
2020-03-27 18:26:12 +0000 UTCI know that you are working hard on polishing the game right now, but when can we expect new story of feature update, because right now, there is nothing to do when you get a max relationship with every girl.
2020-03-27 18:09:24 +0000 UTCYou might already have something planned, but I had an idea for how to introduce Jean, Ororo, or Wanda. Xavier finds out about your "addictive personality," and calls you into his office. There you discuss your addictive properties, and how you should learn to start controlling them. Then he calls in and introduces the new character, and tasks them to "tutor you" in learning to control your powers, as he feels they've enough willpower to resist you.

2020-03-27 08:08:23 +0000 UTCI like cheats as an option in games cause play how you want to play, this game honestly doesn't need cheats though. This game is easy enough without needing to use cheats but I say add it for the people who want to use it.

2020-03-27 05:58:41 +0000 UTCThanks. Sure, I get it, but the thing is, going through the "grind" portions without skipping tends to expose all sorts of odd interactions, situations that I didn't account for an need to be fixed. I can "cheat" on my end, and typically do so to hop directly into a new event and try it out using expected values, but it's the players' ability to end up with unexpected values that produce the more useful feedback. Now I want to make the "grind" as interesting and non-painful as possible, I want to avoid content that players -want- to skip as best I can, but playing through content from start to finish is extremely valuable from a testing perspective.
Oni
2020-03-27 05:53:28 +0000 UTCIn most cases, you need to be player Lvl5, have around 1500 combined stats with the girls, and then occasionally meet other criteria.

2020-03-27 05:50:02 +0000 UTCCan someone remind me how to get the girls to enact the plans on xavier, whenever i try, they just say, what?

2020-03-27 02:23:42 +0000 UTCHi there Oni, long time fan first time poster. i think by "playing through the middle stuff" i think he means just the point grinds on each character. i think having the ability to modify each girls different values and force different relationship stages is what he meant. it would make searching for specific events to check easier i'm sure. thanks for all the work you do, the game is amazing!
2020-03-26 21:42:34 +0000 UTCYes. . . but also. . . "playing through the middle stuff" is a part of what needs testing. :D
Oni
2020-03-26 11:32:49 +0000 UTCI dont care about ingame cheat menu. if i want to i can do it myself. I only care about some reset buttons for the girls, the girls are getting kinda boring as soon as they accept all.

2020-03-26 10:09:49 +0000 UTCIt's a common practice to release a cheat-build for beta-testers. This is exactly what cheats were made for. And since we are bugtesting and playing the game over and over and over and over again from scratch, I think it's just fair to include some "skip the gameplay" cheats that help us along so we can test the new features. For example, when you add a new girl, but you have to be at lover-level with Rogue first, grinding that out "normally" could take a few hours, before you can even test the new girl.
Klony
2020-03-26 09:18:29 +0000 UTCI voted for having a UI-based cheat menu available, because I think that at the very least, having it would help us right while the game is incomplete and testing is constantly being done. Would make it more convenient to find out whether or not a certain bug is only occurring at Love = x or something like that too.
franklydegenerate
2020-03-26 06:33:34 +0000 UTCI completely understand this. For Rogue-Like I personally built up all the stats, but when you have updates that are incompatible with previous saves I'll typically enable console. If you're gonna make a cheat menu, I'd say let it unlock once people either get to a specific point or if it detects a previous (non-compatible) save file.
Lone001
2020-03-26 05:35:00 +0000 UTCI would have the option but keep it hidden to make it so new players don't start cheating straight away since they're new and oblivious to what icon's what hopefully, like add cheats too the special actions menu where your inside your room

2020-03-25 13:33:12 +0000 UTCTrue. There's a diminishing returns factor on ass slapping that after a few times per session it stops being rewarding. I just didn't want people to spam the hell out of it. I might re-evaluate that a bit though.
Oni
2020-03-25 05:57:25 +0000 UTCI tried fiddling with this option, but I couldn't figure out how to get it to work with class objects as the variable. I might keep playing with it.

2020-03-25 05:49:23 +0000 UTCFair point.
Oni
2020-03-25 05:48:10 +0000 UTCWell, since the game is technically non-linear, "new content" tends to get scattered throughout it. I have a sort of cheat setting for myself that unlocks a bunch of the stuff on launch so that I can jump into testing, but it causes some weird interactions that I've just learned to work around. :D
Oni
2020-03-25 05:47:30 +0000 UTCYeah, I should have some more data available. I didn't want to clutter the default UI, but I can try to put it someplace.

2020-03-25 05:01:05 +0000 UTCSo the way to get income up, at least is to use console (edit common file 00console.rpy line 108 to 'True', Then, open console with shift+o, type Player.Income (that should return a value) if it does, then use Player.Income = ### to set your income to that value.

2020-03-24 23:47:03 +0000 UTCAlso, where wardrobe is concerned, "It seems a little slutty" as a response is not a yes or no. When I get that response, I have to work back through re-donning the Custom Outfit and attempting "Wear it Out Now" to discover whether that was an objection or just an observation.
Shremedy
2020-03-24 23:43:10 +0000 UTCGetting some weird ambivalence from, for example, Emma. Zero asks to do something sexual, her paraphrased responses are (in order), "It might be more than you realize" (Zero says go ahead) "I've been waiting for you to ask", then "Are you sure you can handle it?" (affirmed again) she then finally lets Zero Do The Thing. Top line sex stats were close to but under 500. Even if any girl's really into Zero swatting her ass, if you keep going for another round of sex after she climaxes, even if the text says "She jumps with pleasure" and "She gives you a naughty grin", it never adds anything to her Lust gauge.
Shremedy
2020-03-24 23:38:59 +0000 UTCI think the game is paced such that I never felt the need for cheats. Clothing might be slightly expensive but otherwise I'm meh on it. I'd rather you spent dev cycles on good content than easy way to access content.

2020-03-24 23:37:52 +0000 UTCI saw one version of this that was ported to android that let you slide the stat bars for each of the girls. I figure that would be kinda fun. I really would just like messing around with the settings to see reactions with different stats. Aside from that, I personally don't think this game needs cheats considering that you could get Rogue to have sex on night 2 if you mess with events the right way. Now if this had tons of grinding like Witch Trainer to mess with house standings, I use cheats in that all the time so I'm not farming house points for a single action. So that being said, for this style of game, just for my own enjoyment and toying around, the main cheat I would like would be to reset stats/reaction flags for each of the girls/main character.
Spadiel
2020-03-24 21:54:51 +0000 UTCIt took about 5 minutes to figure out how to enable the console and what the new commands were, so I honestly don't think spending the time and effort on a cheat menu is necessary. If someone feels the need to edit stats/money for whatever reason, they have the tools built into the engine. I just think your time is better spent elsewhere, unless it's very easy or is helpful with testing builds or something.
A Good Hunter
2020-03-24 21:50:35 +0000 UTCI don't really mind whichever way you do it. I personally turn on the console whenever I download a new thing, but the only thing I consistently change is the player's money after starting the game. Every other thing I grind out as normal, but I just don't want to worry about money for unlocking clothing or going on dates.
hornguy6
2020-03-24 21:28:19 +0000 UTCI've finished the game's content twice now. A cheat option would be great if you have to release another new version that would cause players to lose progress or reset. It would save a lot of of time and grind to get to new content in the future, especially for those of us that have already been playing the game for a long time.

2020-03-24 19:59:54 +0000 UTCYeah, that's a major point. I think there's a few games where the easy accessibility of a cheat menu has obscured that the core loop is a truly hateful grind.

2020-03-24 18:29:15 +0000 UTCIMHO, I feel it would be best to have the player enable a cheat UI. Perhaps to unlock that ability, they must have a save file with max stats on at least one girl. This keeps people from relying solely on cheats and encourages them to play the game properly because they have already invested some time in that file. But it also allows players like me who just want to play with stats and see what happens with max Inhibition and zero Obedience or weird setups like that which are difficult to actually accomplish in game.

2020-03-24 16:02:35 +0000 UTCMy suggestion would be the Cheat menu is only available for the Stable release. Won't use it myself so don't care if its enabled or not but figure if its available in a limited capacity should limit the affects it has on creating false bugs.
Stavin
2020-03-24 15:57:17 +0000 UTCim ok with it as long as it isnt too much of a workload
twin
2020-03-24 15:45:24 +0000 UTCThe only time need for a cheat menu would be if a version update required a fresh start. I've often gotten quite frustrated by having to start over instead of just try out the new content. If you added a skip to new content option on builds that break old saves that could work. Although I have no idea how hard this is to do and if it's hard enough to slow down development then i'd say leave it be.
2020-03-24 15:45:12 +0000 UTCA cheat menu isn't something I'd want you to invest your time in. Balancing the 'grind' with the 'reward' is an important part of development and just having a cheat menu is a bit of a crutch in that - though some people will want to cheat regardless for various reasons (like they always restart the game when a new version comes out, or they just like to play around with things rather than play the game "properly", etc). If you want to make cheating a bit easier, just enabling the dev console by default is good enough.
Langy
2020-03-24 15:25:28 +0000 UTCI'd like the cheat menu to be hidden behind a secret command or something fun like that. It's distracting when you're putting all this work in doing your grind and being tempted to cheat by a menu option. Perhaps also the debug console can be enabled through this menu?
2020-03-24 15:17:21 +0000 UTCSo several of the unofficial android ports include cheats, ones I've seen include money hacks and being able to change the slider for the various stats for example. But I think basically a cleaned up version of the dev cheat GUI with only relevant stuff would work fine, doesn't need to be fancy
Finn Kempers
2020-03-24 14:49:55 +0000 UTCOni, have you thought of having the cheats become unlockable via having different girls following you and doing things with/to Xavier or at his office at night? Something along a quest line/stages.
2020-03-24 14:42:18 +0000 UTCThe UI based cheat mode that allows you to move the sliders around already exist but no longer works :D

2020-03-24 14:24:37 +0000 UTCOh yeah speaking of grinding, that reminds me. May I suggest something like progress bar or something similar to it, so we could see when we level up or how much money we get daily? Like something you hover and it tells you how much experience you have left or money per day

2020-03-24 13:52:30 +0000 UTCas someone who grew up with nes, snes. cheat codes were normal thing when you wanted to change up the gamplay or just have a casual run of something. if they are there we can decider ourselves to use or not use.

2020-03-24 13:51:07 +0000 UTCI voted no, but I don't really have a strong opinion. I personally enable the console so I can mess around on repeat playthroughs, but I like to play normally on the first few runs of a new release.

2020-03-24 13:49:08 +0000 UTCI agree on the money grind being a bit much. Another option would be an in-game method to earning money (Work for Xavier/McCoy for the day, maybe). Other than that I don't see a need for cheating.
shagg
2020-03-24 13:42:00 +0000 UTCI don't think money cheat will be much usefull. It takes a while to earn money, but when you bought everything - money is just useless, you can't spend enough. So i think balance is quite there, besides you still need more time to win girls favor, they will not accept your gifts if they don't like you. But i don't really care about that, if other people want it - why not. I just hope that it will not add too much bugs
WillyECoyote
2020-03-24 13:28:18 +0000 UTCRogue Like Expanded mod has a neat feature where you can click and drag the affections bars to change their values. I find this super duper handy considering that to be on the safer side I don't really use older save files with newer builds and i don't really want to do Pokemon style grinding every time to get them up like I did the first go around.

2020-03-24 12:57:57 +0000 UTCI think a basic UI based cheat system would be a good option, as it will allow people to start clean saves and quickly be in a position to try the latest content you have added.

2020-03-24 12:19:03 +0000 UTCAs long as the default renpy console works (which I can enable by changing a boolean value in a certain file), I don't really care. 2020-03-24 11:13:48 +0000 UTCWell, I *could,* and I see the reasons for doing that, but then I don't want to get people *completely* stuck if they change their mind. Maybe make it something fairly easy to activate at the start, and *possible* to turn on and off later, but a little bit of a hassle just to discourage people flipping it on and off enough to "keep people honest."

2020-03-24 09:28:52 +0000 UTCthe only thing i use cheats for in this game is money and i use a save editor for that, but that said a UI based menu would be easier. all in all you're doing a great job ONI. Thank you!!!

2020-03-24 09:23:29 +0000 UTCIf there WERE to be a cheat menu, I'd make it so it would just be possible to give yourself money and level up the MC and the girls. That would bypass a lot of the grind for when new versions are finished being tested. Whatever you do, DO NOT enable the dev console for the playerbase. That would muck up and give so many conflicting reports during the bugtesting stage. Up to you though, Oni. I personally wouldn't touch cheats except to increase stipend so I could buy gifts quickly. I don't think people necessarily want cheats to be honest... I think they just want to have the option to get past the small grind for the early stages of the game when they're feeling lazy or quickly get to the good stuff when new girls come out.

2020-03-24 08:32:14 +0000 UTCI initially got into this on a pirated cheat enabled version that let you set stats by simply clicking on the stat bars. It was interesting and fun, but I only found myself using it on REPEAT playthroughs, when I wanted to screw around with the system a bit, do things way earlier than I should, etc. It's a nice option to have for those who are interested, but that doesn't mean people will use it constantly, seems fairly harmless to add in.

2020-03-24 08:22:15 +0000 UTCI'm all for officially adding cheats since I know that that is what some players prefer. Personally, I find it takes away from the actual gameplay, especially in a game like this. But it has usefulness in some scenarios as well. Anyway, yes since I'm sure a number of players want this, and there is no downside to giving them the *option* to play the way they want to.

2020-03-24 08:18:12 +0000 UTCI feel like something like cheat menus can wait until the story itself is about 70-80 percent complete as the current difficulty of the game isn’t that hard to begin with.

2020-03-24 08:05:08 +0000 UTCIn a game where you find yourself grinding stats for porn, no reason not to let people jump straight into the action if they so choose.
2020-03-24 08:04:43 +0000 UTCI'll be honest, it won't be all that much work. Like I said, I already have the basic framework of it, and would just need to polish it up. It's less a "can I do it?" issue and more of a "should I do it?" thing. It wouldn't be super pretty or anything, just some basic renpy menu choices that would let you raise and lower various stats by clicking the buttons. I do appreciate the concern though, and there are certainly requested features that definitely would take up a lot more of my time if I tried to implement them.

2020-03-24 07:54:35 +0000 UTCI would love a cheat menu for the game. I would implement it as a flag that is set when you start a game so you can have a cheat save and a as the author intended save. (or multiple of them of course).

2020-03-24 07:50:48 +0000 UTCI would love a cheat for money. By the time I've got a harem of girls obeying my every whim I'm still working to unlock clothes for them all...and still can't afford to take them on dates. Making money faster would make the early part of the game a lot more fun for me. So yes, unlock that cheat!
2020-03-24 07:48:11 +0000 UTCPhrase this as "what are you NOT working on so that you can support cheat menus" and you'll get a different answer. I'd rather have more content and game features than another widget that you have to code and support.
2020-03-24 07:47:38 +0000 UTCHonestly, turn on cheats is one second in the game files. I just want to get my Jane content already.
2020-03-24 07:39:58 +0000 UTCI could add some options. I don't want anything too complicated because that would take my time away from working on sexier things, and I don't want anything too grindy, because then players would be "working a job just to play the game," and that's no fun. I'm open to ideas though.

2020-03-24 07:33:35 +0000 UTCTheres No Need for Cheats, With Each Girl I need about 3 - 5 days to almost max out all of the girls affection, love and obedience (excluding the points from the clothes) so by day 30 to 50 im already in a mass exhibisionist harem with all the girls so cheats feel kinda pointless

2020-03-24 07:33:19 +0000 UTCPersonally, I feel that the patrons voting should consider the additional work we are putting on the devs and measure exactly what we want. Cheats are great. But I feel we should incentivize a focus on staying the course with building content so we (and the devs) dont get bored with the same stuff. I want new things and I think they're on the right path. Bottoms line: let's not get ahead of ourselves, fellow degenerates. Let them do their necessary good work.

2020-03-24 07:31:43 +0000 UTCWhy would you need cheating in this game in first place. I don't get it. It's too easy already as it is but if you'd put cheat option on top of it, it'd ruin this game. In my opinion.
