I kinda liked the first couple, yeah they are DUMB, but the cast (especially the English one) know it and lean into it. That right turn into drama is SO common in Anime (normally happening in the last 4-6 episodes of a TV series), and SO doesn't fit the show. I always considered "Blue Seed" as being where ADV was pre-Eva (lotsa cast overlap, serious and silly story elements tackled with SOME grace) as having reached a reasonable standard of dubbing (not THE best, but good enough not to quibble about). The original Burn Up being from AD Visions "we're gonna SHOW stuff and we DON'T MAKE EXCUSES" phase (Guy, Yohko etc..). Doing full-bore action comedy often seemed beyond creators in the 80s and 90s (they'd fall back on drama, which rarely works). The best comparison to this MIGHT be "Full Metal Panic" (which has issues of its own, especially the first season, but has a MUCH better idea of what it wants to be and do).
