Making a Flying Vehicle pt. 1 - Design/Blocking

Continued in Pt. 2

First part of a short series (no idea how many parts it'll be- probably just 2??)  working through making a flying vehicle, heavily implementing "Wiggle Bones", which are ridiculously fun.

Sort of making this up as I go, so we'll see how it turns out!

Probably self explanatory, but I don't get into it in this video; if you're going to make practical use of the wiggle bones, you'll probably have to bake them before rendering or anything like that :)

Oh and here's Kirill Udodov's artstation, because it's just crazy cool.

Looking back at this, I can't help but wonder if wiggle bones would be useful for your crowd sims, Ian. Little people that lean when they walk uphill, for instance.

Does baking the wigs work on versions after 2.8?

Chris Voss

awesome!!

Jimmy Deface

same!

Allan

we'll figure something out....

Anderson Atlas

Have you tried Jan van den Hemel's approach? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwTuGg-Ua1g

GI Jungles

It could be done with a cloth sim, and hooking each end to an empty parented to each part you want to hang from, but that’s way more computationally expensive than this method.

Justin Harrison

For the ropes, on Valve Engine, they had physic ropes... Perhaps it could be done all with physic constraints...

Christian Clavet

As a newcomer here, I salute you for doing what you're doing. You are a great inspiration. Also, this is the best 7 dollars I've ever spent. Thanks, daddy Ian.

Id be curious to know how you created the sky/fog in your image shown at 3:06, and how you managed to blend It with the clouds so well (is this digitally painted or actually made in Blender?)

John Gergen

This is awesome!

Kai Christensen

especially considering how much cyberpunk 2077 references absolutely every sci-fi property, i think its totally fine to have tech overlap with that universe. the way sci-fi references itself is so collaborative anyway.

Cavan Infante

SO useful!! Nathan Vegdahl showed it to me a while back. Useful all over the place but especially with rigging.

Ian Hubert

This looks really promising, can't wait to see what you do with it in part 2. I like seeing how you "make a thing" ;)

Shawn Hawkinson

Have you checked out cableator? it's does what you want. you attach a cable to an obj with just to clicks. I love it. it is a paid addon though. https://blendermarket.com/products/cbl

Lara StarSlayer

that alt-click trick is gold

CGMatter

I'm wondering if something like this may help with the cables.....

Walter Pfohl

Ruddy marvellous... as usual. You're like the guy from Beautiful Mind trying to work out an impossible puzzle in game theory or something - Look forward to the next one. I love the modelling parts of your tuts... and then... THEY LIVE!!!! Thanks Ian.

Doug Brown

The part when you show the reference photos and talk about the way you will implement them in the design is very valuable. Cant wait to see it textured!!

Luka Hrgovic

Yesss It's true!! I was going to finish this series with putting the vehicle in a final shot, so I was going to go through the process then, but yeah this probably would have been the best video to cover that in.

Ian Hubert

Great tutorial Ian, would be good to cover off rendering those wiggle bones, baking etc, otherwise you get some proper random shizzle.

Sam Morgan

You are so damn amazing. That is a beaaautiful blumermphly!!!

Alex Ezorsky

It's SO good!!! Adds so much naturalism so easily!! I'm stoked to check out the mesh tension addon!

Ian Hubert

OMG! My buddy Steve made that wiggle bone Add-on! It's so cool to see the amazing Ian Hubert using his script! If you haven't yet, check out his mesh tension addon. https://blenderartists.org/t/revised-mesh-tension-add-on/1239091

Richanatario

Ah thanks! That's true!! And I should definitely implement that more! I always assumed you couldn't texture it well, but I just realized I don't really have a reason to assume that??

Ian Hubert

Soooooooooooooooooooooo, what you can do it a vertex chain with no faces, and add a cloth sim and a skin modifier. BAM instant cables. (add hooks for your connection points).

Felicia White

So cool!!! Looking forward to the next part Ian! I always come away from your videos ready to make stuff! Cheers. :D

Peter Arata

I'll try to cover that in the next video, with the modeling and texturing and all that! :D

Ian Hubert

God tier.

Ian

How do you get so good a greebles?

Ninja Nolan

Hi Ian, first time poster here. I just wanted to say thanks for all the great tutorials and the content you make! Your lazy tutorial series was one of the main reasons I decided to start learning Blender :) Hope you have a great day!

[yawn.]

Gotta say, I'll never not smile when I hear "wiggle bones" mentioned :D Thanks Ian, gonna check this out!
