This song was written by Claude "Curly" Putman. He was from an area of Jackson County in northeast Alabama called the Paint Rock Valley. I lived there for 25 years. Curly's nephew and his family were my neighbors, and they are all good friends of our family. When I first signed up, I suggested a song by The Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies, "Grace (Write Me)" https://youtu.be/mrD2DxDJKZE and another song by their singer, Mike Farris, "Mercy Now" (Live Mary Gautier cover) https://youtu.be/Qt8wiGInALs Two of the most famous versions of this song (other than Elvis, of course) are by Tom Jones, and the late country artist, Porter Wagoner. The following link is a performance by Mike Farris at the memorial for Porter when he passed away. One of the voices you hear from the crowd is Porter's daughter. Here is a link for Mike's cover. It is nothing short of amazing, as is pretty much everything he sings. https://youtu.be/w4fy6JEeKMg

2026-01-09 20:02:30 +0000 UTCIt adds even more emotion when you realize Elvis is buried in his backyard! Along with his parents, grandmother, Lisa, and her son Ben. Lisa has a lyric in her debut song "Lights Out" about being in Memphis and at Graceland. It talks about her family being buried and gone "in the damn backyard". It has a line about a space left for her, which is sadly now filled. Itsa great song and video. You should check it out sometime. Another sad thing was she was at Graceland at Elvis grave for his birthday celebration Jan 8, 2023. She passed away 4 days later.
