I know I'm hella late to this, but I feel you on representation and every Black story needing to be a struggle story. It's a huge problem in publishing, too, though there's more Black fantasy, scifi and romance than ever before and a lot of it is Black people in every which way, in every iteration, which I'm loving.
I agree that this is a British production and is also being adapted from source material written in the late 80s/early 90s. That said, interestingly enough, in the original comics Rose and her family are white. In this instance, knowing that, I'm glad they gave this big role to a Black actress. Still, I definitely get what you mean.

Sandman definitely has issues with how it does representation. I’m not excusing it, they can and should do better, but to explain a bit of context: it’s a British production, and this is kind of typical for them, and also the source material is from the early 90s and they’ve actually improved on it quite a bit.
The casting for Death is chef’s kiss, though.
