I just joined your patreon not too long ago after watching your Interview with the Vampire reacts on YouTube. I absolutely LOVE how insightful and thoughtful your commentary is. It really shows that you're a mental health worker. This episode was so beautiful and sad and terrifying. I love that you fuck with Lestat even when he does horrible shit because you know all of these characters are complicated. I've seen the whole series already, but seeing it again through your eyes is amazing! One thing about the bird symbolism, too, which I don't know if you remember, is that Paul used to tell Louis the "birds" told him things. I find that interesting. I also wanted to point out something I noticed. The last thing Louis ever said to Paul was that he lived him, and then Paul unfortunately completed suicide right in front of him. If you notice, Lestat has told Louis he loves him, but Louis has never once said to Lestat that he loves him. I believe Louis does love Lestat, but he can't bring himself to say it after Paul. Lestat bringing up how he's patiently waited for Louis to love him made me sad, because of course you would be heartbroken if the one you love doesn't look you back. Even though I don't condone the horrible domestic violence Lestat committed, of course.

I love that you pointed back to the bird symbolism. It really goes all the way through the series, starting with Paul’s “birds in his mind” telling him what to say.

Finally supporting your Patreon! Such a big fan of you and Frank and your thoughtful, thorough reactions. The way Claudia seemed to become Louis' strength is so beautiful to watch here and I loved seeing you root for them. Please know It's completely valid to be critical of Lestat after watching this, though i know the 'Lestans' come down hard on people. I agree that Sam Reid is entirely too good at this. I also agree that Louis is understandable in wanting to withhold those pages, and at the same time Daniel's reaction felt valid too. Can't wait to catch up with the rest! 🌮🌮🌮

There are reasons why Lestat reacted the way he did. But he was wrong and there was not excuse for it. Even if you have compulsions/complex feelings about something, it’s not right to dump it on another person and hurt them so much.

It’s the addition Hannah Moscovitch wanted. It seems something that she feels the need to write about. I wish Rolin Jones, the showrunner, would shut that idea down.

Thank you for sharing that. I'm so sorry that happened to you at any level.
I agree that it isnt the only way to build strength for a character, especially when you can represent decades of their life in a single episode.
I’m with you that it’s a small mercy that the assault is left offscreen. And I’ll say that I believe the show puts work in so both assaults have long ripple effects, which is more than some writing that treats assault or abuse as a one-time event that magically transforms a character into what the writers need. You have to trust the writer's room to get you there, which is so hard. I can’t blame anyone who is unable to. Being mindful of spoilers, maybe I’ll see you in the comments for some future episodes, and we can talk about the ripples then.

C/W Thank you so much for your response. I agree with you about all of it. I def think they wanted a way for Claudia to see how dangerous the world is, esp other vamps that she's desperate to find. But this wasn't the only way. Making her feel "safer" with L&L seems to be the point, but also to fear other vampires.
I def see the parallel to L&L fight later. And the etiquette book was certainly a tool and also commentary on the time period. Claudia is not only in his power as a female but as a young girl of color.
I will say that while it wasn't necessary and could have been achieved without SA, they handled it without graphic depiction. We all know what happened without them showing us. It's a small concession, but I'm glad for it.
I can also squint and see the intent. I was molested when young -- it wasn't to the level of what I consider assault -- but undoubtedly, it changed me. Did it make me "stronger"? How does one answer such a thing? It made me CAUTIOUS and taught me I couldn't trust anyone as this was someone close to me. It made me more aware in every situation from then on in life where I (or someone I cared about) could be in a vulnerable or dangerous situation. Breaking someone down isn't the only way to build "strength."
I'm writing this having just woken up and no coffee yet, so I may come back to it to add to my thoughts. I hope it came out as intended.
Thank you again for you thoughtful and really honest take on all of this.

C/W, so please protect your peace.
I’ll be cautious here because of the subject matter and spoilers. Still, the showrunner made a disgusting comment during the after-episode featurette that SA “toughened” Claudia up. I don’t know why writers hold onto this trope that a character becomes “stronger” because they're SA’d.
If I squint, I *think* I understand what they were trying to do, but intent doesn’t equal impact. This episode hurt a lot of people.
Bruce’s use of the etiquette book seems to tie into the show’s theme about forcing people into compliant dynamics. Bruce might have always intended to SA her, but he uses the etiquette book as his excuse and punishes Claudia for not complying with his expectations of an ideal companion. This might even be an intentional parallel to Lestat’s punishment of Louis at the end of the episode. Both are egregious violations of power and control. Claudia and Louis constantly struggle with their nature and the boxes the world puts them in. Bruce and Lestat cannot make them what they desire and lash out.
In this/past episode(s), Lestat warned them about the viciousness of other vampires. I think Claudia was supposed to believe Lestat could be right and that while Louis and Lestat are bad fathers, they afford her certain protections. She can also more clearly see Lestat’s use of coercive control to keep them compliant.
All of which could have been achieved without the SA. It’s baffling. The novels already explore forced vampirism as a metaphor for SA. It’s pervasive throughout the text. Why elevate a metaphor to an assault on your only female lead?
Jessica

You may get here, but my interpretation of “one each” is that Louis and Lestat are enraged by Bardeen’s police investigation in the quarter (making hunting more difficult, putting them all at risk of exposure) and Tom’s ascent from slimy businessman to grubby politician. They’re trapped. They’ve already suffered the consequences of Louis killing an important man (Alderman Fenwick) in Episode 3 and have learned from that.
They can't kill Bardeen and make the investigation go away. They're once again expected to smile in Tom’s face as he throws out a homophobic slur and then asks them for money after he screwed them over on the deal for the Saloon.
So they scratch bullseyes (x) onto their cheeks because they’re impotent to express their rage otherwise. They can at least have the satisfaction of looking at the scars and knowing they hurt them, somehow, even if they couldn’t kill them. It’s very: I’d 🎯 you if I could.
I think it’s echoed with present-day Louis when he scratches that circle deep in the table as he's seething over Claudia’s SA.

Honestly, we are so lucky to have Sam Reid playing Lestat. He's a huge fan of the books and knows Lestat inside out. At the 2022 San Diego Comic Con panel you can hear his voice break and see the emotion on his face when he talks about what it meant to him to get to portray Lestat. It's amazing. Rarely happens that you get a fan bringing the character to life. Definitely recommend checking out the video on YouTube. It happens around the 12.50 minute mark. https://youtu.be/aZgj7pqhss4?si=YCcuDvdTVdQhy-JB

He definitely doesn't understand the love which is confusing because he's literally her "creator " but before making her he did say what will she be "a pet a daughter " maybe that line says it all..it wasn't one or the other it was both but one for us each..a daughter for you..and I'll allow and play along with that because I almost lost you and I don't want to be without you. And a pet for me, because for whatever reason I habe no true connection to her only as a way too keep your here?🤷🏿♂️ maybe I'm off but I feel like I'm at least in the ball park. That's without adding the layer of Louis neededing something to keep his mind busy. And yes as appalling as Lestat has been the last few episodes I'll be dammned before I discredit Sam Rieds acting ability or range by writing him off as just evil. The facial expression the ability to still show love but anger in his face. He is fully committed to being this character and I love to see an actor body their fucking role. He is a genius.

The problem with making a child vampire, because vampire biology stops growth, development and aging, the areas of the brain which develop later wouldn't get a chance to develop at all. Most importantly, the area for empathy which doesn't finish developing until the later 20s. Not that a vampire couldn't grow intellectually and learn from experience... become more "mature", etc., but you gotta wonder how it would be to live forever without a developed empathy center for such a powerful being. To bright side it, I'm sure it would help if a vampire like Claudia felt genuine love for someone -- true love often seems to bring out the less brutal side of people.

For your peace of mind, Bruce and the sexual assault is not part of the book. In the book, Claudia is 5 or 6 years old. I get the sense you know that because of your reaction when you were thinking about it. I wanted to let you know that this was added in to this series not in the books. (Not that it makes SA less horrific!)

Daniel has no reason to trust Louis’ storytelling true, but this is too sensitive a topic to warrant that sort of digging imo. And it doesn’t matter if Daniel wasn’t INTENDING to exploit her. He didn’t NEED that info, like Louis said, it was clear what happened. He was only pressing for it because he’s a cynical asshole (and i mean that affectionately) who saw his chance to call Louis out for the unreliability and went for it.
Louis is already exploiting Claudia and her narrative by sharing her private diaries, and allowing this stranger to hear in explicit detail how she was assaulted would take it beyond unforgivable. Daniel didn’t deserve to have his control taken from him like that, but I completely understand Louis’ action. Especially coming from the perspective of him as a father. Daniel needed a lesson on boundaries (not that he’ll listen lol).

I disagree about Daniel. Like he said, keeping things from him can make you question everything that has been said up to this point. He has figured out how unreliable Louis can be and long before we did. I don't think that what he wanted to know, was to exploit Claudia, but to see how she handled it and how it changed her. Louis is so guilty for what he did.

Louis can be just as cruel as Lestat with words and said he took pleasue in it. Wallowing in self pity wasn't helping anyone. I think it made things worse. Lestat stayed with Louis through years of Louis' self pity. An abused dog would rather be abused then get no attention at all. I don't blame Lestat for finding a companion to try and move forward. Lestat has held back his true power. I give him credit for staying and not killing both of them.

Lestat and Louis definitely win the awards for Worst Parents 😭 I LOVE that Louis fighting back came as a result of him wanting to protect Claudia though! Lestat is so paranoid and obsessed with Louis that he thought Louis would leave with Claudia and I don't think Louis would have if Lestat didn't attack her. Lestat has never understood Louis' love for her.
It's so upsetting that Claudia had to live through the assault she endured to come out a more "mature" person, but you're right, she's probably the most well adjusted vampire right now. She had her moment to crash out and now she knows what she wants in her life and what she has no room for. She's on grab Louis and fuck Lestat time right now. Daniel was definitely wrong for pressing for more info. I've seen people say Louis was wrong for what he did because Daniel is a journalist and it's his job, but needing those details definitely comes across as that "exploitation" Louis is trying to avoid.
The domestic violence scene is TOUGH to watch as well. Sam Reid is amazing because while he makes me HATE Lestat, I'm also mesmerized by his performance and EMOTION. I can FEEL the desperation he feels for Louis to love him the way he wants to be loved, and the fear of loneliness he has. But uhm whooping your husband's ass and dropping him from thousands of feet in the air is definitely not the way to do it.
This episode really shows how passive of a person Louis is as well! And I can only explain it away as a result of the life and trauma he's endured. As a black man trying to rise in the world, he's had to passively endure so much violent and overt racism as well as subtle microagressions. As a closeted gay Catholic man, he's had to passively hide who he is and force himself to present as something he isn't. Hell as the eldest son managing the family, he's had to passively endure his mother's expectations and family's blame. Now as a vampire, he's passive to Lestat's rage and he has no choice but to watch the life he once knew slip by. And Louis definitely struggles with depression so I'm not surprised that after Claudia left he passively receded into himself and their home.
A popular tagline for this show has been "The best show no one is watching" which isn't necessarily true, but really speaks to how tremendously underrated this show is! In the beginning it was because of racism and homophobia, but it's also been poorly advertised. I'm just glad the show has such a PASSIONATE crew behind it who are gonna put out a QUALITY story regardless. And their talent pool is insane.
Can't wait for the next episode, this show only gets better and better. 🌮

Lestat was dead wrong for what he did and I wish he didn't put his hands on Claudia, which made Louis react. And of course, we saw what happened from there. Good on Claudia for trying to defend Louis, but Lestat is just too powerful/strong. His rage for what he’s going through w/ Louis not paying him any attention during those years Claudia was gone, was boiling over. But if Lestat was at his tipping point, he should’ve just left Louis alone tbh.
Louis mocking Lestat for being "cultured" lol I got a chuckle with that line, too. Louis knows where to strike. ATP, Louis and Lestat were just tired of each other. Though it seems they're too toxic to leave each other alone.
Louis straight up told Daniel, that yes, it’s obvious was happened to Claudia. Daniel was doing way too much by trying to read what happened. Why did he need details? Him slapping Louis was stupid, but I’m glad Louis practiced restraint on that ‘cause he could’ve retaliated.
Louis begged to have Claudia turned and Lestat, albeit reluctant, did turn her. Unfortunately, this keeps Claudia ‘young’ forever since she was turned at 14 years old. It was great that Louis acknowledged that they did curse her. He’s not gonna put that blame on her. 🌮

Claudia said the wrong thing about taking Louis. Louis has been hateful to Lestat over the years. His sulking and ignoring Lestat was just hurtful
I think if Louis hadn't blamed him and pushed him away, Lestat may have not been so distant about it. He may have been moŕe sympathetic to Louis. Imagine years with your spouse who makes your home a place of misery and they never showed you love or make love to you? Years of neglect. Lestat was cruel to Louis, but he was honest about what he is. And he told Louis that what he fears most was to be abandoned. And Louis did that in all ways that were important. But he was never hateful like Louis.
When Daniel slapped Louis, Louis knew he deserved it. Messing with Daniel's illness, was fucked up on his part.
Again, Lestat is an asshole. He makes fun of things he sees as unconsequential. I also think he sees her as other vampires will see her. Both of them are to blame for this mess, Louis treats her as if she were human but she isn't. Not sure what made you think he could bring her home. Bottom line Lestat and Louis are soulmates. They love each other no matter how toxic.
I love that you show your emotions while watching. This show will continue to wring every emotion out of you. They should have won Emmys for both seasons. Keep up the wonderful work. I appreciate you. It's like having a friend to watch this with and who loves it as much as I do.❤️❤️❤️

(Btw no spoilers or hinting just interpretation) This episode was hard to watch near the end but WILD. Definitely one of my favorite of the season.
I agree with your comment about Lestat’s impulsiveness in regards to never being able to finish reading books, and how you feel like it is not a throwaway line… and all I got to say that it is actually a huge part of Lestat’s backstory that we won’t get to know about anytime soon unfortunately.
I noticed your reaction to Lestat’s anger at Louis reading the newspaper to finding out about what Claudia was up to, and I wonder if you picked up that he was treating her as if she was a rival for Louis’ love. Then her coming back to pick up Louis and she suggests leaving for Europe and he goes ballistic, I wonder if he sees it as, “She left us, and after putting up with seven years of sulking and you ignoring me you now want to leave me?!” which threatens his biggest fear which is loneliness. I could spend days talking about Lestat’s characterization because he is so fascinating and so is Claudia. They are my two favorite characters.
I do gotta ask, in this episode, when Claudia asked about the vampires out there and for Lestat to tell her what’s true, he says to her that "the vampires out there are vicious” and “the vampires in Europe are much worse,” Do you believe he was initially saying this to manipulate Louis and Claudia from leaving him or do you think he said those words initially to protect them? or both? (By the way, Frank asked in his recent reaction for us to give him questions for both of you to discuss and this one was one of them with some minor tweaks, I don’t know if you want to wait to respond or respond here but I’m cool with whatever.)
