So, I was in high school and a freshman in college when the show aired. It’s been interesting to revisit it as I get older and see what lessons I take away about family, honor, duty, and empathy. My brother was a little too young as it was initially airing, but it’s become one of his favorites as an adult. What makes it unique is how much it challenges its characters. They have global stakes, but also they grow so much during the show because of how young they are when it starts. Their youth and idealism are assets, and we watch them grow up. In this episode, for example, Sokka sets aside what we know is his greatest wish (seeing his dad) to help the world. The show's themes about personal sacrifice really kick up.
