Combat, Chronicled: How to Catch a Spider

Ten years ago today! I can't believe I'm typing that, but it's true (depending on when you're reading this of course) and it's always strange when a fight you watched at the time becomes a historic fight.

But this is one that felt momentous at the time! In the second episode of the 'Combat, Chronicled' series I look back at one of the craziest moments in MMA history, the night Chris Weidman dethroned the great Anderson Silva.

Much was said in the immediate aftermath about the legitimacy of the win, and this audio documentary hopes to put those claims to rest once and for all.

So sit back and listen, as I go into the MMA landscape at the time, how the match felt in the build-up, and the attempts to make sense of the fight itself in the immediate aftermath and the tricky question of what Chris Weidman's legacy in the sport ultimately is in 'Combat, Chronicled: How to Catch a Spider'

Thank you Alan, a wonderful compliment and I’m glad I managed to convey what the build-up felt like! If you could DM me a google map link to where you were driving about mate, I’d love to get a flavour of where the podcast is being listened to!!!

Kyle, this was absolutely phenomenal. I listened to the entire thing while driving rural roads in Far North NSW Australia - you kept me entertained the entire trip. This, THIS is what I have been missing about MMA, the lead up to amazing matches like this, and your work sent me spiraling back to that time. ThNk you so much for all of the hard work and effort that went into this - it is a brilliant achievement. From a jaded 50yr old MMA fan.

Thank you mate. And I agree, and I hope I made his case well!

Kyle McLachlan

Spectacular doc Kyle. Weidman really doesn't get the credit he deserves as an atg at 185.

Stephen Abdullah

Means a lot coming from you Andy, thanks mate. And thanks for picking up on the non-linear narrative, I liked that too writing it πŸ˜‚πŸ‘

Kyle McLachlan

Amazing work, Kyle. Really well-written and well put together. Great storytelling implemented too, I appreciate you jumping around the timeline for when a moment best fit in instead of just rattling off the events in order. Weidman beat Anderson fair and square twice and that punch he landed while caused by Anderson messing about was set up by him. That backhand he throws caused Anderson to dodge right into the line of sight for his follow up strike.

Giving myself a couple of days off after this large project. I will return for UFC 290 review though, probably Sunday πŸ‘

Kyle McLachlan

Are you doing a UFC 290 preview?

Michael Walsh

Thank you for your continued support and kindness mate, I’m glad you enjoyed this one

Kyle McLachlan

Just another home run, Kyle!

Jack McReynolds

Made by Kyle for Kyle. Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it

Kyle McLachlan

Excellent stuff Kyle

Kyle Linderman (RoguePerogue)

I was going for a Brazilian flavour mate lol but Herb Alpert is about right haha

Kyle McLachlan

But then...he started clowning... *cue Herb Alpert style trumpet* That moment had me rolling 🀣

Arran Deans

It’s longer than Orwell’s Animal Farm text wise lol. I might go that route eventually as an E-book or something! For now I will focus on the episode for you guys πŸ‘

Kyle McLachlan

It’s half an audiobook lol. Maybe you should consider print publishing ??

Andrew Campbell

Thank you! I’ve just realised though if this script is only a quarter of the guide to pride…just that mean that episode will be 4hours long?! πŸ˜‚

Kyle McLachlan

Amazing work, Kyle. Carefully and respectfully put together. Congrats, sir.

Andrew Campbell

Means the world to me mate, so glad you enjoyed it. I just want to give the fighters and these stories their due, and Chris Weidman deserves so much respect. I just don’t want this achievement to be overlooked!

Kyle McLachlan

Congratulations Kyle that was fantastic! These long form audio documentaries are such labors of love, it really comes through listening to the narration, interviews, and music. I can still remember watching this card when it happened, I was a bit too young and uninformed to grasp Silva's importance but I came away a fan of Chris Weidman above all. Thanks again, can't wait to see what's next!

Luke Z.
