Mayweather vs. McGregor: Five Years On
Added 2022-08-31 19:14:08 +0000 UTCWait just a sec', don't go! This is not a joke, this shit is serious. Yes, the special podcast I was referring to yesterday is indeed this one, a retrospective on the much-maligned Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor 'super fight'.
But this is a bumper edition of the Patreon podcast that hopes to put the bout in its proper context. And for a show such as this which covers many different combat sports and the history of those sports, how could I leave out perhaps the biggest crossover in combat sports history between two of its most historically significant fighters?! That's right, I couldn't. But don't worry I doubt I'll ever cover the anniversary of Randy Couture vs. James Toney (or indeed Ray Mercer vs. Tim Sylvia)
So, sit back and relax (maybe not if you're driving or operating heavy machinery, in that case please do keep your wits about you) and hear Bloody Elbow's Mookie Alexander and myself talk all about Mayweather-McGregor from a technical standpoint, and from a historical standpoint. NOTE: This was originally recorded to mark the one-year anniversary of the fight, but much like the 'lost' episode of 'The Fistorical Perspective' I recorded with Connor Ruebusch that you also find on this Patreon feed, I edited and cleaned up the audio as well as popping up throughout in the present day to offer further context and thoughts on the discussion points. See this as either a 'Director's Commentary' or 'Director's Cut'.
As always, please leave your thoughts in the comments below or reach out to me on Twitter @CombatCr to let me know if you enjoyed this one! And tell your friends!
Really hope you guys enjoy this, as a hardcore history episode of this Patreon podcast. Speaking of hardcore history, the deep dive on Miguel Torres is coming, I am collating the research materials so I can back up my claims with primary source materials, and that episode should be coming in the next week.

Have you heard the story that Floyd walked into a bookie before the fight with a backpack full of money and bet on himself to win in the 10th as the odds were long on McGregor making it that far. After being told that he couldn't bet on himself, a different person walked in with the same bag of money and made the same bet. Night of the fight, wouldn't you know it, but after carrying McGregor for a while, Floyd finds that finish in the 10th. KA-CHING!

2022-12-03 01:18:00 +0000 UTCI have a weird relationship to this fight, because it was actually the hype of the buildup to this fight which got first got me interested in combat sports. However, now it sorta represents everything I don't really care for about combat sports. Also didn't even watched the fight when it happened. really interesting to hear the perspective of someone who had already been a fan for years at that point, now 5 years later
