WCMBI - Chapter 270: The Unveiled Truth

"I have had a saying ingrained in my ears since childhood. It was my father's advice, and it went, 'An Alpha should never imprint.'"
"What do you wish to convey by mentioning this?"
The term "imprint" made Melissa wary of the Duke. Could it be that the Duke knew about her imprinting on Ian as well? But now it was all in vain; that information must have reached him somehow.
"When an Omega imprints, they die alone, but when an Alpha imprints, they bring death to everyone around them. I had a duty to protect my family, and Ian was to be my successor in safeguarding the family legacy."
"It's a preposterous notion."
"Haha, indeed it is. Looking back now, it seems like a contradictory statement. In any case, the outcome is the same—death. After dying, what good does preserving the family do?"
Just as Melissa was about to rise, attempting to end the conversation, the Duke swiftly interjected.
"Seeing your actions, it appears you do not know. Still, I wanted to save my son by telling you."
"Yes, please speak."
"Ian imprinted on you a long time ago. It has been several years since madness and illness took hold of him. Judging by your expression, it seems you were unaware until now."
"That cannot be true."
"Why is that?"
"If he had imprinted on me, he wouldn't have sent me away from here."
"That aspect is indeed puzzling."
"Of course, it is. After he expelled me, the incident occurred, and I never saw him again until recently. Are you telling me that he imprinted on me during that time? Oh, unless you are referring to someone else. Don't worry; I won't be jealous. After all."
Interrupting her, the Duke cut through her doubts, stating, "The Omega he kept by his side was only you."
"Surely, you do not think he imprinted on a Beta instead?"
"It's an unbelievable claim."
"I found it equally incredulous. Yet even after witnessing Ian's demeanor today, I failed to discern any peculiarity," Melissa mused.
Silence enveloped them.
In response to his words, Melissa offered a subtle, downward nod. No matter how she pondered over it, Ian's actions seemed excessive and blindly devoted, just as the Duke had stated. It wasn't just this particular incident, which could not be attributed solely to acts of love.
"This is unbelievable." Melissa whispered.
As fate played its capricious games, and her own identity faded while his began to emerge, Melissa let out a weary sigh.
"I'm not trying to burden you with saving my child, mind you. However, I hope you recall that my words were entirely sincere. I will prioritize your freedom, as per Nicola's bequest."
The Duke paused, gathering his breath before continuing, "Yet, if even the smallest ounce of affection remains for Ian within you, wouldn't you contemplate an alternative course?"
