Patreon payment updates

Hello everyone! Sorry for the long post, but here’s some info about upcoming changes to the Patreon.

In short: your pledge will stay the same amount, but from December, will be charged monthly to support the channel in advance of a video, rather than per video after the video is posted. If you’re happy with this, you don’t have to do anything. If it seems like a lot to you (I mean it is a step up from a new video every 3-4 months!), I really don’t want to rip you off so please look into it!

Patreon will officially change to monthly in late November, and I’ll make more posts then about the exact prices of each tier*.

Some longer details:

Patreon as a whole is retiring the ‘per creation’ model, and is forcing everyone onto a monthly charge instead. As I’ve mentioned previously, this isn’t something I’m a fan of, as I’ve enjoyed doing this ‘per video’ charge, I feel it’s better for everyone, and has gone well for many years. But, it seems we must change.

When do the new charges occur?

With the old/current ‘per video’ model, you pay for how many videos there were posted in the previous month (always has only been 1). But with the new ‘per month’ model, you pay in advance of the month ahead. With the official transition happening in late November, this means the charge schedule will look like:

November 1st: Charged for the video in October (FOOF video)

December 1st: Charged for your support of December month

Jan 1st: charged for Jan etc.

So you won’t be double charged in November, and then you’ll be charged on the 1st of each month from December (or from the day you joined if you join after the official transition in late November).

What does a transition to monthly charges mean for the channel?

I’ve been thinking about it and with the change the Patreon will now directly support Extractions&Ire. While I can’t promise the same level of rewards on those videos as with the Ex&Fire video (name in description, chalkboard art etc) I don’t think many of you are here for those rewards specifically, and are just happy to see me post the Extract&Ire videos here too.

Overall, the two channels will keep to a monthly posting schedule- with either 3-4 Extractions&Ire videos for one Explosions&Fire video. This is roughly the schedule I’ve kept for a while, but just a little more committed. So the rough schedule for video releases looks like this:

- November: Lead Perovskite synthesis (Video 1 of a hopeful 2 video series making fluorescent perovskite nanocrystals)

- December: Introduction video for another long series (will announce soon, but I’m very excited to do it) + maybe a first synthesis video in that series

- January: Explosions&Fire video, probably on Perbromates, XeF2

- February: Perovskite video 2

- March: Extract&Ire vid in long series, maybe standalone inorganic video with a cool element (I like these videos)

- April: Explosions&Fire video, maybe on nitrous oxide? Tetrazole explosives?

I’ll keep updating this schedule, so as a Patreon you can stay updated about what your support is helping me cook up! (I used to be better at this a while ago but dropped off oops…)

Additional perks of being a Patreon remain the same, and I hope to get some new merch out eventually which I will release here first with a discount code, as we did with the last round of merch.

*The reason the ‘exact’ price will change slightly is due to me going to charge you AUD rather than USD. This will actually lower the conversion fees I pay, as currently everything is converted to USD and then back to AUD so I can spend it, which is very silly. But I want to keep round numbers! So instead of paying $20USD for example, I’ll charge you $30AUD, which is equivalent (currently) to $19.82USD… so yeah not a really noticeable difference (unless one of our economies tanks!).
