I think if the lid/riot shield combo is working and you can control the strength, it's better that Kevin and yourself don't suffer any real injury in the long-run. Also sorry you're running out of anti-septic lol, I've always used Hydrogen Peroxide for cleaning cuts.

Bapping him with the bin lid is one of the most creative ways I’ve seen for establishing dominance in birds before. From what I’ve seen of Rhea, they respond much like parrots. Kevin ruffles, hisses and bites at you just like an agitated parrot does. There are some holistic avian calm things you could try..... But I honestly think once Kevin gets more space, he’ll dramatically chill out. ^-^ (Source: Years of study to be an animal behaviorist)

Even though we know it’s kind of silly, their actions were out of ignorance rather than malevolence, mostly. I know you’re going in many different directions, but maybe also try a video where you calmly just try to educate them re how this kind of training works. And show them that you have the expertise to do this. And also bring in another expert or show videos of other experts working with rheas. Ultimately you probably will have to switch to a pillow or something like that, but it would be nice for people to know that you didn’t just invent this training method. I liked your video too. It shows how rough he is. Hang in there; this too shall pass.❤️
