I'm so late to this but it's so funny that you're sitting in the back miming Santiago 😂

Sending love to your girlfriend. She's doing great! But this comment contains spoilers for her. Great reaction, especially you, Austin, in the background. It's really funny to see. It was to be expected that you'd be noting down a lot more, or rather, different things, as this season progressed. I'm really happy about that. You're circling around certain things, and that's noticeable not only in your written notes but also in your live reactions, where "we," who have seen the show many times (and/or know the books), are like, "Yeah, let him cook!" Come join us, watch it five more times, and we'll see you deep down the rabbit hole. Just kidding. You should definitely rewatch it after the next two seasons. It'll be amazing for you. And that has nothing to do with missing some things, but rather that the show is meant to be watched multiple times. There are so many layers that can only be grasped by rewatching and having knowledge of later events. Like, for example, you noticed when Daniel says, "I'm a bright young reporter with a point of view," and Armand smiles because he's reminiscing about torturing Daniel... You only realize that when you know what happens later. And then you smile yourself and think, "You handsome fucking bastard!" A reporter once wrote, "This series plays separate games of four-dimensional chess at once." And it's true. Just the visual language... and the art. The three Furies aren't there for nothing. If you want, I can write something about it. Anyway... I love your reactions. At this time, I'm here for IwtV Content and Penny Dreadful.

Temporarily living in Prague, and it's been so fun to run around the city and see lots of the locations from this episode, like the Theatre des Vampires (actually a museum), their apartment, and the park where Louis and Armand first meet.

Re: the syrup, I don’t read that as inconsistent personally. Syrup has a sticky/tacky texture, and at this point was already a known movie/theater prop substitute for blood. Claudia makes a face, so we know it doesn’t taste good to her / isn’t blood…I guess she could guess the texture could be something else—glue? Petrol? Idk, but nothing I can think of seems as likely to be used as blood on stage as syrup, and we know Claudia is pretty “astute, boy,” so I think the dots connect

In my mind when they say things taste chalky or like paste, it's more like everything has a weird taste or texture but they can still identify what it is and don't enjoy the taste.

I love the romantic tone of this episode, and Daniel’s skepticism and snark. He cuts right through the treacle and the juxtaposition is hilarious. It’s a telenovela!
Movieman - about the taste of fake blood - I don’t know that their taste sense is suppressed so much as altered. Louis also mentions “soap” along with chalk and ash which is a STRONG but awful “non-food” flavor. So maybe syrup is identifiable and distinct but nasty.
Armand is my evil baby I love how horrible he is. It’s interesting to see how fond(???) he seems to be of Daniel at times. Among the glares there are smiles and weird wistful looks too. Maybe he sees him like a misbehaving but occasionally amusing pet. I don’t think he takes Daniel seriously as a threat at this point at all.

About the green tie on Dreamstat: All the outfits we see him in are outfits that he wore in season 1/things Louis remembers him wearing! Obviously we already saw him in white, with his throat slit, and the outfit he wears in this one is what he was wearing when he went to dinner to meet Louis' family. His tie was green & he had a white carnation in his lapel, which I think is a subtle nod - possibly intentionally by Lestat, to the green carnation, which became a secret signifier of queerness, because Oscar Wilde (who was infamously incarcerated for homosexuality/sodomy in 1895) wore them often, and they became heavily associated with him. Louis also had a green tie at that dinner, just a much less vibrant one. It's cool to see, or try to remember, where all of Dreamstat's outfits originally appear, as there seems to be some significance to Louis.
Théâtre des Vampires is directly inspired by a real theatre: Théâtre du Grand-Guignol, which was also in the Pigalle district of Paris, and was open from 1897-1962. They put on gory, controversial (sometimes sexy) horror shows. Grand-Guignol later became a catch-all phrase referring to that kind of entertainment because of that theatre, so while it wasn't "normal" it was very much a real thing, and beloved by more niche audiences. Anne Rice always said this was the source of inspiration, but interestingly the theatre in the 1994 film is really fancy, while the theatre in the show looks far, far closer to how the real life one looks - both in interior and exterior, down to things like the private boxes, and those big stone angel statues you can see in some wider shots above the stage, on either side of it. :)

I find it very interesting that Armand seemed to defend Daniel when Louis was prying into his mind about Alice declining his proposal. Armand could see Louis had gone to far.. then responds with.. "She wanted to say yes"... I wonder how much of that was genuine empathy or was it all guarding himself. I suspect it was actually a bit of both. Knowing what I know about the characters.. I find this a very purposeful scene and something I previously had overlooked.
You'll come to the darkside eventually on Pookiebear. I personally get frustrated that people don't always fully see Louis' abusive and toxic behavior as much as they are quick to point out Lestats.. Especially knowing that what we know about Louis recollection of him isn't perhaps the most accurate. They are all toxic messes.
The performances were all very good in this episode. This season has some truly amazing performances. NONE so great as Sam Reid's in episodes 7 and 8 IMO. That guy is SOOOO talented. I would've thrown every award I could find at him after his episode 7 performance. Holy moly. Cannot wait for season 3. Me thinks he will finally get the credit he so largely deserves.
Also.. I have a hard time believing Armand was trying to destabilize him with that vision as it was something that Daniel was supposed to forget. I believe what happened is that Armand was poking around in his head (and saw how upset he was about what Louis was saying) and that may have triggered the recollection for Daniel. Maybe the familiar feeling of Armand in his head triggered it. But I don't think he purposefully flashed him something he made him forget. I would really enjoy it if you could respond to these comments that you can't do in front of Darkwave AFTER the video when you're reviewing the episode. Not sure how that would flow but it would be nice to hear your thoughts on the points we make directly to you. Sorry this was so all over the place.. I edited it a few times and kept adding things.

Re: the box Lestat left for Louis, no spoilers, just a minor tease: for book readers the box is a little bit of an Easter egg, and as far as his reasons, I don’t think we’re supposed to get much more than what you described Movieman, but I do think season 3 might give some character reasons to illuminate the “why” of him thinking of this a little more.

Darkwave: "He seems less toxic than Lestat!"
Movieman: Looks right into the camera
I'm dying. Great reaction as per usual!
