Miracle (Full Reaction)

It was magical being able to see the recreation of such an incredible moment in sports history. The directing during the hockey games was spectacular! I've also learned that Buzz Schneider was actually played by his real life son! How cool is that?!

This was definitely a Ted Lasso inspired movie. I hope you enjoy it! β€οΈπŸ‘

Fun fact (mild spoiler) - even though the original announcer from the games recorded new audio for this movie, they used the actual audio from the games when the announcer said "do you believe in miracles?", because he didn't feel he would be able to recreate the genuine feel and energy of the moment.

β€œ I’ve got a fever and the only prescription is more COWBELL!” A few rules in hockey - each team can have 6 players including the goalie, so you can pull the goalie and play another skater in their place. There are three 20 minute periods. In the NHL the typical shift, time a player is on the ice before switching, is only about 40 seconds, so switching a lot is normal. Chip it out, means clearing the zone, the area inside the blue line. If the puck leaves the zone all the offensive team players have to leave the zone before they can take the puck back in. For a penalty the player that committed the foul has to sit in the penalty box for typically two minutes, there are a few penalties that are called major penalties which are typically five minutes, and then the team has one less player for that time. Slashing is hitting someone with your stick.

Thanks for the recommendation!

"Mickey Mouse!?" Gotta love corporate synergy! 🀣 Growing up my Dad constantly talked about the Miracle on Ice and how it was the most amazing sporting event he ever witnessed, so it was special seeing this movie with him when it came out. I really liked how they had Al Michaels recreate the play by play. It really added to the authenticity and helped build the drama.

As a Canadian, our sports rivalry with the US is pretty strong but I still enjoy this movie a lot. Great reaction

I saw a sports documentary on the Philadelphia Flyers, nicknamed β€œThe Broad Street Bullies.” β€˜Miracle’ does a great job of explaining the overarching strategy concocted by Brookes to counter the Soviet style of play. According to the Flyers documentary there was another method that proved successful. The Soviets would play exhibitions against various NHL teams or collections of players like the All Star team referred to in the film in order to raise hard currency for their program and their nation. Essentially the same Soviet team played the Flyers and didn’t enjoy their brutally physical style of play. After, I believe, the second period the Soviets sent word that they refused to take the ice for the final period. The response to the Soviets was, β€œYou don’t play, you don’t get paid!” The Soviet team returned to the ice rather sheepishly, little good it did them in a very lopsided loss. Upon reflection, that game revealed two effective strategies: beat the crap out of them and threaten to not pay them!

So, the American embassy personnel in Teheran were being held while the Lake Placid games were being held. From memory, they were held for, like, 666 (or 444?) days. The CIA put together a presentation for them when they were released; a, sort of, β€˜what you missed’ sort of thing. Reports from both the released hostages and the case officers who put it together were fairly unanimous that the Gold medal win in ice hockey was, bar none, the most emotional portion and the part of the presentation most likely to elicit tears. They certainly weren’t alone. I was under ten years old and those games, being from Texas, as I was, were the first hockey games I’d ever seen in my life. Mike Eruzuone said in a documentary that his team had been so micromanaged, even to the point of what to do when the anthem played (β€œPut your hand over your heart and sing like a bird!”) but no one had told them what to do once the anthem was over. The layout for the medal presentation was Eruzione standing alone on a small platform with the Soviets and the Finns lined up to the left and right and the remainder of the US team lined up sort of behind. Once the music stopped, Eruzione turned, beaming at his teammates, and called his team up to the little platform. The sportscaster who had asked the famous question, β€œDo you believe in miracles??!!??…..YES!!!” noted it seemed to him another miracle that the entire team could fit on the platform.

You should watch a show on hulu called shoresy. I remember seeing this in theaters with my team. The next day our coach made us do soooo many ladders. Again.... Again. My legs were sore for a month.

I love how the hockey was filmed in this! It really puts you right into the action and makes you feel how frenetic the game is! I've only been to 1 hockey game, an LA Kings game many many years ago. I did though, get to sit in the stands as an extra for filming of the Mighty Ducks sequel! That was exciting! Jax, I didn't know you were such a big athlete! That's so cool!! I also played basketball! I was a small forward. Mainly a defender. I couldn't shoot a lick! What position did you play?

"Slap Shot" starring Paul Newman is another good hockey movie, although the tone is,,, different. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be streaming anywhere.

"This is something that happened before I was born." Well that makes me feel ancient. But yes, this Olympics happened while I was in High School.
