X-Men Dark Phoenix (Full Reaction)

Happy Movie Monday!! Our journey through the X-Men films is almost at an end!

When Jean Grey absorbs some mysterious and powerful force, she must learn how to deal with her new abilities and their growing instability. The X-Men must band together to save her and the rest of the world from being destroyed by aliens that want to use this new force to rule Earth.

Fun Fact: I have learned that my brain believes phoenix should be spelled pheonix. 😂

X-Men Dark Phoenix (Full Reaction)

Comments

Jean Grey in the comics is one of the characters who dies the most often—so often that I’ve lost count. But she always comes back, like a phoenix rising from the ashes. This movie received a lot of negative feedback from fans, but for outsiders with no expectations, it might be an enjoyable watch. The problems with this movie have been mentioned in other comments already. I wished they had done a better job, but given various constraints, this is what we got. The Dark Phoenix saga is one of the most exciting parts of the X-Men storyline. Unfortunately, every movie adaptation has failed to do it justice, and I dread seeing a third attempt. Maybe we should skip the Dark Phoenix arc entirely and move on to her later stories. I’ve always wanted to see her as the White Phoenix of the Crown on screen, but I know it’s unlikely. She’s too powerful when she has full control of her powers. Even in the comics, she didn’t stay in that form for long and didn’t really fight anyone. She just looked at the universe in her hand, beyond time and space. If the movies were to show that form of Jean Grey, the villain would have to be someone truly formidable to make it interesting. I can’t think of anyone who fits the bill. Even the latest comic arcs felt too rushed, ending crises in a few issues because she kept rejecting her power, and dying (again). But once she accepted her power and came back, everything could be resolved easily. I love Jean Grey and her story, but when a character is too powerful, it’s hard to write an engaging plot. I hope that when Marvel reboots X-Men, they handle it carefully and thoughtfully, without rushing and giving the characters and the story the depth they deserve.

Enjoyed Quicksilver telling a running student to slow down. Hypocrisy!

Re: The New Mutants timeline(real world) -2009 - first thoughts of a New Mutants film at Fox -May 2015 - Fox hires director -Director wants to make it an adult horror movie -Fox decides they want a watered down, YA horror movie -Pre-production begins Apr 2017 -Initial filming wraps 16 Sep, 2017 -Initial release date planned for 13 April, 2018 -Fox reverses course and wants reshoots to make it adult horror -Release date pushed back to 22 Feb, 2019 to avoid Deadpool 2 -Release date pushed back to 2 Aug, 2019 to avoid Dark Phoenix -Disney acquires Fox -Disney initially doesn't know what to do with the incomplete film -Release date pushed back to 3 Apr, 2020 -Disney wants reshoots, but the young actors have gotten noticeably older and most of the production team have committed and moved on to other projects - reshoots never happen -Director and a new editor complete the final cut late-Feb/early-Mar 2020 -A global pandemic messes up Hollywood just a bit -New release date set for 28 Aug, 2020 -Movie actually opens on 28 Aug (869 days, or 2.38 years, from the original release date) Also, there is strong evidence Disney never wanted to do a theatrical release and wanted instead to just drop the film on Disney+, but there was contractual language that required the theatrical release. So Disney did the bare minimum of final advertising and did the release before theaters completely reopened post-pandemic. Normally, development hell tends to happen on the front side of production, but The New Mutants got it from both ends.

That makes so much sense that this film had extensive rewrites and such. I have never even heard of New Mutants, but I'm glad we get one more film in the series!

I am with you Jax! I enjoy the movie, though it isn't my favorite. It does have problems, but there's still things I enjoy about it, the train fight in particular is one I love. But there was a lot outside that caused issues. The movie was rewritten a lot, it was in post production for a long time and was delayed several times. It went through extensive reshoots and Disney also bought Fox, which caused a fair number of changes too since they knew this was likely to be the final proper X-Men film. New Mutants I believe suffered the same fate. I've never seen that movie, so it will be exciting to watch it with you Jax!

Please react to the Deadpool 3 trailer! 🙏

We a long time ago gave up on trying to figure out if these all belong to the time line of every other movie because I don't think they even really had a plan. Like the first 3 movies have nothing to do with anything since First Class. Logan is years and years after this movie in terms of timeline at least so nothing that happens in that has to do with this movie, we also don't know what timeline Logan is from, he may have been from a completely different one.

Andrew Polinski

That makes sense. She really wasn't utilized much in this film.

Jacqueline

I had no idea!!

Jacqueline

We all were hoping lol, but at least we should get some amazing Jax quotes out of it :D

It's so clear Jennifer Lawrence wanted out. That's why they killed Mystique so early and why her makeup/ prosthetics looks so terrible here lol. Compare it to First Class, where it's so intricate.

Andy

I was hoping she'd skip this one lol

It's very hard to do something like the Dark Phoenix Saga in a movie, The Shi'ar empire has not being introduce in the movies, shapeshifting aliens could have been Skrulls but they probably didn't have the right to use them in this movie. Using the Hellfire Club would been much better, many of their members we have seen in movies already, Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost were in X-Men First Class, Frost was also in Origins : Wolverine as Kayla's sister. Donald Pierce was in Logan as the cyborg hunting Laura.

Comic comparison: This film is closer to the Dark Phoenix comic than X-Men: The Last Stand, at least the space mission aspect of the movie. In the comics, the X-Men were kidnapped by Sentinels and taken into space; Jean Grey volunteered to pilot a space shuttle to rescue the X-Men and bring them back to Earth. During the battle, Jean was exposed to a lethal dose of solar radiation, letting out a telepathic scream with her dying breath. Across the universe, the Phoenix Force answered her call. Phoenix then crash-landed the shuttle in New York's Jamaica Bay and revealed herself to the X-Men. The Hellfire Club (You Met in X-Men: First Class) enters the scene, unleashing Phoenix's dark side and giving birth to Dark Phoenix. The narrative then expands to include intergalactic empires, such as the Shi'ar, the Kree, and the Skrull Empires. You'll know the Kree and Skrulls from Captain Marvel (2019), Skrull being the green-shapeshifting alien. This is just a tiny bit of the overall storyline with no real details to limit spoilers. But those elements involving a space shuttle, solar flur, and aliens is from the Dark Phoenix comics. Phoenix fighting the X-Men is done more justice in Last Stand, along the scene of Jean holding back Scott's blasts allowing them to see eachother eye to eye for the first time pulled from the comic. X-Men 97: If you want more insight into the X-Men I highly recommend X-Men 97 (2024) over any of the films, best thing Marvel has created since Infinity War for me personally. It's alot closer to the comics, adopting many of the storylines like the Dark Phoenix Saga. So yeah it's just amazing and does justice to every single character.

LittleGalaxyBoy

LOL... they've been doing that with the X in the Fox logo since the very first X-Men. :) Also, FYI... Mayday comes from the French "M'aidez"... help me.
