X-Men: Days of Future Past (Full Reaction)

Sentinels are destroying the world. Designed to go after mutants by a man named Dr. Bolivar Trask, the mutant population is now almost extinct. Hoping to save the world, Wolverine volunteers to go back in time to get the X-Men of the past to change the future.

(Since the Rogue Cut was only available by renting or buying it, I decided to watch the theatrical version so that it would be easier to access.)

Watched on: HBO Max / Runtime: 2:11:30

(HBO Max has started putting previews before their content. There was no preview when I watched this, so please be aware of that when you are syncing your video.)

That's a great idea!

Jacqueline

You should watch the Rogue Cut whenever you get a chance. I think that cut is a tad better. This one is still really awesome though.

Always loved this movie! Great way to bring the old and new cast together. I was also worried that Logan might overshadow the new cast, but James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender more than hold their own and they even quite literally jettison Logan out of the movie for most of the climax. This was Fox's way of rebooting the franchise so that they could continue making movies with the new cast without having to worry about making sure the continuity with the older movies fit. So keep that in mind with the next 2 X-Men movies when we see characters we've previously seen.

Interesting take on Mystique. You're probably right about them wanting to use JL's star power more.

Jacqueline

I can't wait to see Logan! I keep hearing that it's one of the better films in this franchise.

Jacqueline

Thank you for letting me know that was the Potomac River. That's so cool that they were able to recreate the DC you grew up in so realistically!

Jacqueline

Thank you! Haha, I can neither confirm nor deny information about my code word. I'd love to see the Rogue Cut of this film!

Jacqueline

I hadn't realized that JFK had health issues. In the movie, I think it was Mystique pretending to be Nixon when the sacrificial moment happened. I agree that it seemed a bit out of character for Nixon.

Jacqueline

I love that!

Jacqueline

I'm excited for Deadpool too! I haven't seen Apocalypse or Dark Phoenix so I'd like to do that.

Jacqueline

That's so sad that everyone was wiped out in this alternate future. I would have liked to have seen this version of the future built out a little more as well. Since they were trying to change it, maybe they didn't want to get us too invested in it.

Jacqueline

Honestly Jax, you can skip X-Men Apocalype and Dark Phoenix if you want. I'm so excited for Deadpool!!!

Days Of Future Past Comic: This film draws heavily from the comic Days of Future Past (1981) a storyline that depicted a dark future that was caused by the assassination of Senator Robert Kelly, Charles Xavier, and Moira MacTaggert in 1980. Mutants and their allies were then hunted down similar to what we see in this film. In the comic a much older Kitty Pryde (Played by Elliot Page in this film) was sent from the future of 2013 back into her younger body. This part of the story took place in present day during the 1980s when the storyline was released. The comic pretty much followed a young Kitty Pryde trying to convince everyone that this possible future was real and in the end they stop it. This possible future still exists as it's own alternate timeline known as Earth-811 within the Marvel Multiverse. Marvel did return to this future a few times with the most recent being X-Men: Days of Future Past - Doomsday (2023) that showcased how everything went wrong post assassinations. This future is also the home of Bishop, Omar Sy who we see in this film. In the X-Men Animated Series version of Days of Future Past, Bishop was actually sent back in time to warn the X-Men rather than kitty jumping into her past self. The animated Series does a really good job with his character and was my introduction to him, X-Men 90s Days of Future Past is even credited as being superior to the comic itself or equal in quality depending on who you ask. Seeing an older Kitty Pryde in the Future Past comic was pretty cool as this highlighted her character as a hardened veteran, massive contrast to her younger present day self who at the time was a new character to the X-Men comics so fans were pretty undecide on if they liked her or not. The comic also had a larger affect on the greater Marvel Universe as of course the comics all existed together so The Avengers, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man etc. They all suffered from this dark future as well with the Avengers even resigned to protest against the government's laws towards mutants. They were all wiped out in this alternate future. The Roster is also a little different with Storm leading the team and Wolverine, Colossus, Angel, Nightcrawler, and Kitty Pryde backing her up. The comic does spend far more time in this alternate future which is something I wish the film did but nonetheless still a great film. Timeline confusion: So pretty much the events of this film has changed everything post 1973. This is why Scott and Jean are still alive the events of X2 and Last Stand changed greatly, most likely Jean never killed Scott but she could've still became the Phoenix but just never died. This new timeline pretty much allowed Fox to reboot the X-Men allowing them to do whatever they want with future films without worrying about the canon of what came before. Deadpool (2016) is the first film in this new timeline so you'll notice changes right away going forward. Just remember that you're in a whole new timeline now where some events stayed the same while others have changed. First Class being the start of both timelines and then after 1973 they branch off into two timelines.

Like most of the x-men movies I really enjoy this movie for what it is, but I do need to ignore some continuity issues and there really being no logical explanation as to how Kitty suddenly can send people back in time, it does not make sense to her powers in the movies or the comics. Also Mystique, I like her character but she's not really Mystique. She's somebody who looks like Mystique and has her powers, but she is lacking her personality. I think they made her a more heroic character in order to keep Jennifer Lawrence front and center as these movies was when she was fresh off of Hunger Games and one of the biggest stars at that time and not because this is what makes sense for Mystique.

I really enjoyed Logan, I don't know if you'd call it an X-man movie but it is referenced in one of the Deadpool movies.

I’d rather they spend 5 more min on furthering the story or give me another 5 min of Quicksilver than explain why Wolverine has adamantium again on his claws. I mean I think it’s pretty easily implied that Magneto had something to do with it lol. Magneto’s powers re-emerging shouldn’t be a surprise given the last scene of The Last Stand. The only one I’ll semi- agree with you is Kitty’s powers evolving, but tbh even then I mean she’s a mutant. The whole basis of their kin is evolution, whose to say her powers can’t evolve or create secondary powers. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal lol

As a native Washingtonian, I can tell you the producers did their homework. That's what DC police cars looked like when I was a kid and that's how old RFK stadium looked back when the Redskins and Senators played there. Also, the body of water Logan got thrown into was the Potomac River.

Horace Cocroft

great reaction! Is your code word "Lamby"? don't bother acknowledging if I'm right. Can you watch this movie again, only slightly different, but 10 times more awesome? It's called Days of Future Past: Rogue Cut.

Mister Lou

This movie by itself is certainly entertaining, but the continuity issues are annoying. Magneto has his powers back! Charles is alive AND in his own body! Logan has metal claws again! Kitty can somehow send people's consciousness back through time, which is related to her ability to walk through walls HOW, exactly? Ugh. I mean, this is comic book stuff we're talking about, they could have easily come up with a "comic book-y" explanation that would've taken 5 minutes of exposition, but they were too lazy to do so. I suppose the good news is this movie reset the timeline anyway, so none of that really matters anymore. Going forward, the only reliable history is what you saw in X-Men: First Class and this movie. This movie is loosely based of a story from the comics by the same name. In the comics, Kitty was sent back through time to stop the assassination of Senator Kelly, Charles & Moira McTaggart by Mystique & her cronies, a pivotal event which led to a similar dark future with mutants hunted by Sentinels. Yes, I like Blink too :) The stuff we saw Bobby do in this movie is very much like Iceman is in the comics. Without spoiling anything, the post-credits scene ties into "X-Men: Apocalypse" from 2016. They were chanting "En Sabah Nur", but that's all I'm gonna say :) For continuity/backstory, you don't NEED to watch any more X-Men movies if your only concern is understanding Deadpool. If you want to watch Deadpool 2, definitely see Logan(2017) first. You'll want to see Logan anyway, it's a fantastic movie :)

This may be a tad long, Dearest Jax, please bear with me…… The Paris Peace Accords were the negotiations that ended America’s involvement in Vietnam, although with no mutant sightings. However, one of my favorite historical stories: At the negotiating table where America would officially acknowledge its very first war not ended in victory, was a particularly incensed American military officer who could no longer sit still. After pounding the table and wagging his finger at his North Vietnamese counterpart, seething, “WE won EVERY battle! Every time you stood and fought us, we slaughtered you!” The North Vietnamese smiled smugly, spread his hands and concluded “…..and yet, here we are.” The bullet that killed JFK would have had to bend and hold in space and time if Texas Governor John Connally and his wife, accompanying the President and First Lady in the open topped limousine’s seats were directly opposite from the First Couple. They weren’t, though. Gov. Connally and his wife’s seats faced backwards in the limo and were 6” closer together and 6” higher than JFK and Jackie’s. If you take those differences into consideration, then the path of the bullet gets much straighter (It still deflected a bit inside JFK’s body) and came to rest in Connally’s wrist, I think. The offsetting of the seats was a structural issue with the drivetrain of the Presidential limo. In a very certain sense, JFK was a mutant, though; he had some sort of degenerative condition. That and the fact that a Japanese destroyer sliced through his plywood PT boat in WWII caused him to live the rest of his life in pain that would, likely, have only gotten worse had he lived. I’ve already mentioned the ‘more evolved’ description and how that’s NOT a thing. The biggest problem I have with this movie is ‘President Nixon’ offering to sacrifice himself if Magneto spared everyone else. From everything we know about him, that just doesn’t jibe. He served as an officer in the Navy during WWII and left the war a richer man than when he entered it by lining his pockets with poker winnings, often fleecing the much lower paid enlisted men in his crew during the all night poker games which were outlawed across the Navy and certainly were not appropriate for an officer to participate in with enlisted men. Nixon just wasn’t a man to lay down on the barbed wire for his men to cross.

Lamar Smith

At the end of the movie it showed the front page of headlines praising Mutants for saving the president, sentinel program cancelled and Trask arrested for trading military secrets. So it never came to existence.

"Which version of the cast is this going to be?" Yes

At last my favorite X-Men movie!

Catherine McCubbin

Thank you!! It's such a great series. Deadpool should be lots of fun. I've heard Logan is fantastic.

Jacqueline

I'm watching in release order. You're right about Deadpool being next!

Jacqueline

Deadpool 2016 should be after this, anyone know what order she's doing these in..? I stopped watching after X-Men 2000, so I could binge everything up to and including Deadpool 2016....

Diiirk706

Congrats on making it this far in the X-Men film series, Jax. Up next is the one you waited for: Deadpool 2016! What I’m actually waiting for is Logan 2017, but that’s for a later time.

Aldo Gonzales

No spoilers. Jax hasn’t fully caught up yet.
