Vecna is a famous D&D Lich that eventually ascended to godhood. A lich is a necromancer (a wizard that summons the undead, and just generally plays jump-rope with the line between life and death) that performs a ritual that turns them into an immortal powerful undead. Their soul becomes bound to a phylactery (like a Hoarcrux from Harry Potter - As long as the phylactery is still intact, the lich cannot be killed). Vecna in particular is famous enough to have magic items that exist in the game setting that revolve around him. Namely, his eye, and his left hand. In order for a player to use them, their character has to sacrifice their own body part to make room to replace it with Vecna's. A terrible price to pay for terrible powers!
