6502 serial interface

Building on my previous videos on RS232 and charge pumps, in this video, I use the MAX232 chip to build a bidirectional serial interface for the 6502 computer.

I point out the limitations of implementing RS232 in software, so naturally the next step will be to add a UART to offload the serial processing, but that will have to wait for the next video.

As always, I appreciate any feedback. I'm also working on putting together a small add-on kit with the extra components for the serial interface (UART, MAX232, connector, and other components). I plan to announce the kit with the release of this video, though I still have a few loose ends to sort out.

In any event, thanks as always for supporting these videos!

Hi David, sorry no. I do not have the code... :-/

Maurice

Did you ever find the code from this video. I have just purchased the rs232 kit and wanted to follow along, but as I have not implemented the ps2 kb I don’t have the starting point code for this episode

Hi, i know that Ben has a github repro but i am not able to find the related source code to his episodes. Any hints for me? Thanks in advice ...

She seems to never understand why someone would ‚waste’ time for low level tech stuff while she takes it for granted every time to watch ultra commercial stuff on high tech ;)

Yeah, I really like how you own your errors, Ben. 👍🏻 (I know it's also a lot easier than re-recording the video, but there's something both humble and humbling about your willingness to show you also make mistakes.)

Definitely microseconds - 104ms would be 9.6 baud! 1/9600 = 0.0001041666667 = 104x10^-6 = microseconds :D

Aaron Carson

Is it really 104 milliseconds or is it microseconds?

Kedarius

Thanks for catching that. Indeed it's an editing glitch.

I saw the pause as well. I have been bugging you for a UART video for some time. I am so excited! Awesome content as usual. My wife asked me why I pay for your videos…I said this is why and showed her this video. She went back to watching her Real Housewives and left me alone to play with my 6502. Life is good now!

the first time i watched it i just thought the video was buffering, but when i went to rewatch it check something and it did it again, i realized it was dead air. i am not sure if it was deliberate to give time to read what he is pointing at.

like usual this video gives me some ideas for projects, and a better understanding of the of how computers work at the lowest level.

Superb Ben, looking forward to the uart episode…

Tony Bell

Great content. I was also going to point out the pause that Matt mentioned :D

Joseph Holley

Awesome!

Great video Ben! Thanks, as always. Heads up that I think there may be an unintentional pause between 2:03 and 2:07.

Can't wait for the add-on kit
