Hmm - I've not done it. I know a woman from Chicago went missing doing that hike so it is a concern ... but I've heard a lot of good things about it. I don't think you can go wrong with either! Hmm - for Tohoku, perhaps Yamagata? Yamadera is really nice. Kakunodate is an old samurai town in Iwate / Akita. Nyuto Onsen is unforgettable! There's so much!
