📹🐟Behind The Scenes: Hagfish Slime🐟📹

Hey Deep Peeps! Meet Karl Menard, aquatic resources manager at the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory in Bodega Bay, California. In the video above, he examines hagfish slime, which is a mix of mucus and special thread cells that have combined with seawater.

"We were lucky enough to work with Karl Menard, aquatic resources manager at the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory. Karl confidently guided us on our hagfish journey," says Mimi Schiffman, the producer of our hagfish episode."

"He was able to gently move the hagfish from one tank to another and back again a couple of times to try to evoke that incredible slime that this video hinged on. In the short time that the hagfish was in the smaller tank, it generated an impressive amount of slime for us to film. It’s hard to see the slime when it’s in the tank so Karl also maneuvered it out of the tank for us to see.

And of course, when the hagfish jumped ship, Karl safely popped it back in the tank. See Karl and myself in slimy action in the video above! This behind-the-scenes video has no audio, just some very slimy visuals. "😊
