Can Kyoto be a day trip from Tokyo?

Yeah I wasn't too excited about Osaka too.. So I cut my trip short and went to Himeji instead - The castle was amazing!

There are so many Temples and shrines in Kyoto it could take days just to visit each of them. I also spent 5 days in Osaka and after having been in Tokyo for two weeks going to Osaka felt redundant in many ways. Especially for those of us who are in Japan for a limited time. Osaka can feel like Tokyo Lite™. In hindsight, I would've skipped Osaka and spent more time in Kyoto. I needed time to really soak things in. There are parts of the temples where photography isn’t allowed. I would often just sit and absorb everything for a few hours just to commit the details to memory. Some people may skip then shines in favor of the larger temples, but then you may never visit places like the golden money shrine. Visiting Nijo Castle or the Kyoto Imperial Palace should also be on your list. These tours can take several hours and you need to plan around the tours schedule. Thinking of visiting the Moss Temple? Reservations must be made in advance... Only hand written requests (submitted by mail including a return postcard w postage) are considered. If you plan to visit you should start making reservations several months in advance. In short, I agree with John. One can not visit Kyoto as a day trip.
