Tuition for the first cohort is discounted from $4,000 to $2,500, and spots will be limited to 3 or 4 students (depending on the volume of applications). Here is the full description of the program, and a brief video explaining the program. We look forward to your applications!
Foundations Certificate
For students desiring a structured approach to the School’s curriculum, we offer a two-year Foundations certificate program. The program has the dual aim of introducing students to the core concepts of the School’s research program as well as building skills necessary for critical work in the humanities: how to engage bibliography, assess primary and secondary sources, characterize arguments, and survey a field.
Over the course of two years (divided into six, four-month terms) students will take a total of ten of the School’s courses: four elective courses chosen from among the School’s live offerings, and six “core” courses from the recorded archive (two from each of the school’s three “tracks”: Political Thought, Human Ecology, and Race & Empire).
Written work for the program includes journal entries, the completion of a series of skill-building assignments, and two written exams. Students will meet with their cohort for eight 90 minute sessions over the course of the term (fortnightly), and will have four meetings with school faculty per term (monthly): one discussion class, one skills tutorial, one lab section, and one individual feedback session.
Workload for the certificate is ~400-500 pages of reading and 8 hours of class time per month, in addition to 4 hours of cohort meetings and 1-2 hours of faculty meetings per month. Students should be prepared to commit about 15 hours a week to their studies in the program.
Total cost for the course is $4,000, payable in five installments of $800. This cost includes tuition for four live-session courses (value of $1000). Upon completion of the program, students will receive tuition credit for three additional Mimbres School courses (value of $750). The remaining cost of the certificate goes to support the work of the School’s faculty in running the program.
To apply, please email themimbresschool@gmail.com with a short text in the body of the email responding to the following items: 1) Your name and time zone. 2) Have you taken Mimbres School classes before, and if so, which ones? 3) Please describe your interests, educational background, and reason for desiring to take the certificate. 4) If the cost of the tuition is burdensome for you, please describe your finances. No other application materials are necessary.
