Pico-8 Celeste Update #4 – WIPs, Have a Listen!

Celeste OST Pico-8 remake is underway!

You can watch a video above where I compare the original tracks with my Pico-8 arrangements (will only take you three minutes!). Excerpts are from the first four tracks:

Just as there’s a certain unity of melody, harmony and sound design throughout the original soundtrack, I’m also trying to keep some sounds common throughout. I’ve settled on a “piano” instrument using the instrument editor in Pico-8.

It’s mostly made up of instrument 5, but includes instrument 3 at the start to give it a bit of a punch, and volume decay from 7 to 1. Depending on if this instrument is used for melody or accompaniment, I can loop the last half of the SFX to give more movement and expression.

The piano melodies in the original soundtrack are very expressive in relation to the beat. They’re often behind the beat, which is one of the signature characteristics of the melody of Resurrections (1:30 in the video above). To try and capture some of this expression, I’ve created a few variations of this instrument:

Now, a very quiet instrument 5 precedes the punch. So the attack of the instrument isn’t really heard until row 3. This is like playing “behind the beat.” I can delay the attack further by adding another row of instrument 5 at volume 1. I can also play with the SPD, though that would change the flow of the volume decay from 7 to 1.

Hope you enjoy the WIPs, more soon!
