Yeah. I guess the Channel Mastery allowing for variation in power (doesn't seem like you get that with normal spells), using spells while wearing armor, and the amount of mana used are the most likely answers. I suppose it would be pretty shocking to see someone dump months worth of Cesa's mana regeneration into spells, then be back to full mana a minute later.

Jac Onue

We still haven't seen T4 of Offensive Auras and Utility Auras. And T4 of Magical Utility could potentially have a hidden skill next to Hybridize. Something that might require Channel Mastery at Rank 15 and also 15 channeled spells or something.

The idea that normal mages don't use metamagic is ridiculous. Only when you reach gold will your Firebolts deal 9,999 dmg without metamagic. Something like Fire Affinity, Heat Mastery, Fire Synergy will always be useful for a bronzeplate Fire Mage, along with Chanting and Overcharge. Even Jamus's Lightning Ball only does around 2,600 damage without metamagic. And when you go into the Badlands, the damage cap jumps up to 99,999. My guess is that Aura Magic with it's metamagic and combined with Rain's macros and Channel Mastery bullshit looks unlike anything Cessa has ever seen before. Also the ludicrous amount of mana thrown around and all of it happening in metal armor.

Would Elemental Refinement actually be a better pick for Rain’s last skill point compared to Empire of Will (focus stat boosted) or some other skill? Rain already has Prismatic intent as a kata he needs to spend time on but he will eventually reach a point of maxing it. What happens if he reaches that point and still hasn’t run into any essence monsters to increase his cap (meaning he is capped with nothing no skills to train and has to settle for Captain duties and soul processing)? Elemental refinement, as another kata would require time to master in preparation for finding and farming a lair for Ascension. Elemental refinement is also supposed to increase the effectiveness of the various elements through the practice and can be used to recharge a lair with its respective element to farm. Though there isn’t much information on how exactly elemental refinement increases the effectiveness and by how much. Empire of Will would be able to massively boost Rain’s Focus stat (especially if doing a Nova) which will increase the effectiveness of his skills in other prismatic intent slots (did focus have a positive impact on winter?) as well as giving a bigger mana pool before an engagement if his regeneration outpaces it (a task made easier when some ranks in prismatic intent happen). It can also be used to buff various mages of Ascension and deal more damage and take down higher (essence) monsters. A solid pick overall. Getting mana sight is also an option as it can be used along with detection and can make it easier to work on prismatic intent and mana manipulation. But that doesn’t really help Ascension besides becoming a better sensor. Well Rain is still undecided and many things can happen which could influence the decision. Rain will probably hold off on choosing while they cross the ocean to Bellost most likely as having it as an emergency to adapt to a specific situation is useful.

Maybe Essence Mana looks visually different from the Chaos Mana she's been seeing all her life, and she's tryna work up the courage to ask Rain WTF he's doing. Rain is back in his armor now, so the intimidation factor is back in full swing for people who don't know he actually a cinnamon bun.

Starless

It actually wouldn't make much sense for most mages to bother much with meta magic. Rain can get good effects from it because of his mana regen and dot aura spells, but most mages think of mana in terms of what's available to them in a given hour or day; not mana per second. Then, you have to factor in the damage cap. Sure, you could spend a skill point and a bunch of mana to get a skill to the damage cap, but you could spend the same skill point and a comparable or possibly even lesser amount of mana just casting a higher-tier spell that already reaches the damage cap. That only leaves utility effects like longer range, or whatever else normal mages have access to for metamagic, but most mages are going to skip spending skill points on those in favor of having more spells available, since having more utility/damage spells or meeting unlock requirements are going to be a higher priority than spending extra mana to improve the more esoteric qualities of spells you already have. Remember: if you're already doing 9,999 damage with a spell, and you add a 1000% magnifier to the effect, you're going to end up doing 9,999 damage, but with a much higher mana cost.

Forrest Minter

Keep in mind, mages typically hoard mana. For good reason. 99% of mages without mana are practically helpless against monsters or other awakened. So if you have mage sight, randomly seeing someone casting spells that cost so much mana would be surprising. Alarming, even, depending on circumstances. Then there's the fact Rain is casting on a metal ship. While wearing metal armor. While at sea, where dangerous Whales are attracted to mana. While casting spells she is completely unfamiliar with. While having it also be a tier 4 spell, so it's probably even more complex and impressive. Yeah, her reaction isn't that surprising lol.

@Jac Onue I doubt the majority of mages Cessa has seen use meta magic at all or well even if they have access to it. Most mages are going to be like early Kettel where 'meta magic' ends at dump more mana into spell for more damage. The mages that do use and train spell control with meta magic are going to be limited by their number and unit systems. Using distance as an example, Rain can control his Aura's to the nearest millimeter or more while most people's spells round to what is basically the closest yard (914.4 millimeters). The difference in precision here is insane and that doesn't even count how often Rain switches meta magic around.

Atlas Dwarf

Nice chapter Some last few chapters again to bring to closure all that mostly and hopefully they get some proper time to rest and have a break and train and begin the era of discovery and travel, chilling mostly, of the story, so they can properly build ascension and grow :) They are too much stuff to do and it's going a bit everywhere with too much stuff, rushing them and half-backing them with the pressure real, close and all-time permanent, poor rain and co, give them a break so then can do thing well and delete a lot of thing of the to-do list :) So Anchor works like that, if i understand right when he use/create one, it uses one of his slot of Prismatic intent until the Anchor end? Seem damn broken with so much use, well a lot still needs to be tested with but it seems really good

Zarik0

I mean, Rain's macros aside, shouldn't most other mages have a similar amount of meta magics in their build?

Jac Onue

It could be the quality of his magic that are getting to her. Range, timing intervals, and all the other 'refinements' of Auras by multiple aura manipulation Skills at once probably make his Auras look masterfully made and controlled.

Atlas Dwarf

I'm really curious about what Cessa is seeing, since she keeps freaking out every time she sees Rain use magic. Hope we'll get her PoV next chapter.

Jac Onue

And I could definitely see Dozer hanging out in Rain's bonnet (made by Tallheart out of deepsteel, of course).

Jump 'N Shoot Man

Ahh, I thought he was referring to the Emperor. Makes much more sense now

Tagmin

Fecht is the Emperor and the citizens of the Empire idolize him. It’s very normal for people to name their kids after their idols. Shu is the alias he had to take because his real name is to obviously Adamant.

Garrett

He made an alias remember? He got to pick a new name.

Kendelle Trotter

I'm kind of confused about this Fechton/Shu thing. Was Shy the Empire guy they had picked up? Was it hinted somewhere that he had some relation to Fechton?

Tagmin

I know where the bird is! It’s in the outlet by the light switch!

BagFullOfLizards

Ty for the chapter, soul chapters are still my least favourite kind though :’(

David Ford

The pacing is super jarring

jdouglas

I missed character interaction in this chapter. Not that I dislike soul stuff, but it's best in small doses.

Enkelados

in barstone rain wants also to see the watch

His Dad

Let’s hope the awakened in the city got the hell out since it was vaguely established by Staavo that unaffiliated awakened are not treated well in the empire. Besides the extreme xenophobia the Empire as a whole shares for the entire world outside their borders.
