Cultures of Newhome: CARNIVALIA!

Cultures of Newhome: CARNIVALIA!

Comments

I'm honestly so eager to see the different ways in which the Draak-Kin have settled into Newhome, and how they've chosen to interweave themselves with the native inhabitants of the planet. Carnivalia seems like such an interesting sneak-peak into that <3

Perish the thought! Gladiators are all properly trained and insured in Carnivalia, and with a very few exceptions, all willing. (The Tribune made a violent serial mugger a gladiator as sentence for their crimes last year as a poetic way of demonstrating that the criminal wasn't quite as strong as they thought. I fully supported the decision and the execution was one of the more poetic and just I have ever seen, and the fight was hugely commercially successful as well.) It takes more than grumbling to get one in trouble with the MoTaC. The Tribune and its Arbiters have better things to do than harass grumblers. Part of what makes Carnivalia so very dangerous is that it knows when to hide its fangs and when to coat them in red. A lively, festive, vivid red.

Carnivalia is dazzling. A bit TOO colorful, in my opinion, but I think that's part of the point.

Living as a VIP for three puls (months-ish) will almost certainly get someone hooked, hard to justify living elsewhere when convenience and satisfaction could just be next door. And with the Department of Truth and Consequences, any nay-sayers venting to the wrong genta will probably find themselves becoming an unwilling gladiator the next morning.

The way this advertisement / propaganda poster / worldbuilding piece is written is so interesting! The mix of clashing colors and fonts is a bit disorienting though, reminds me of people trying out the coloring options in MS Word on an invitation card in the old days xD

Thank you very much, magical crow and/or raven. Or possibly rook or magpie.

A most wondrous piece of worldbuilding indeed!

So glad you enjoyed it! The truth was certainly bent, but never broken here, as far as I know. The Impresario did indeed play a key role in the defeat of the Death Angel (though it's rather ignoring the key roles others, especially Darktooth, played), was indeed the individual most responsible for the rise of the Empire, and did indeed personally revise the entire Tapa culture. You are correct that this doesn't tell the truth, but it doesn't quite lie, either, I don't think. As for what happens to those who refuse... well, it isn't monstrous. They are immediately escorted to the transportation terminal and allowed to leave, assuming they have the tickets to pay for transportation away, though they are branded with a small mark which prohibits their return. But the Ministry of Happiness is very, very good at persuading them not to do that. Few indeed carry that mark. Why would you want to leave such a wondrous place after finding it, especially since housing, medical care, therapy (including some very... exciting forms of therapy), education, training, and employment are provided to all citizens for free?

it was lovely to see a good bit of Carnivalia in this entry, as well as what becoming a citizen of such a place may entail! Though, I could certainly tell it was made under the careful eye of Vantage, given how they took credit for things they didn't achieve, and how they seem to have distorted the truth in certain parts of this. I really do like the visuals used here, the shimmering rainbow effect seems to be capturing some sort of essence of the Kin here (either that or something beyond the visible spectrum). I do wonder what happens to those who decline the offer to become a member of Carnivalia after the time is up. Though, such things are probably a spoiler. Regardless, this was a lovely way to cap off the year, and I am excited to see what sort of things are yet to be discovered!

A fascinating piece of...literature...to be sure. I'm intrigued by the style of art used to depict The Impresario & the Sponsors. It's flashy & eye catching, but also hides details, & could make it harder to actually point them out amongst a group of their peers. Not that I think they're really trying to hide who's who or anything. It does make me curious on how often The Impresario & it's Sponsors are seen by the public though. Carnivalia as a whole sounds like a nightmare for anyone with tendencies to be overstimulated. & I'm immediately eyeing the small clues of the less pleasant side of things. The Pontifex & the Ministry of Expansion's existence, the lack of indication of what happens to those who visit & decide they don't want to stay. Lack of information about how one gets a job if they become a citizen. I'm curious if it's at all a choice, or if it's assigned. They certainly made sure to list the most glamorous jobs, but I'm aware enough of economy to know there are a much larger percentage of non-glamorous, but vital, jobs left unlisted. All in all, it is an excellent piece of propaganda, & I quite enjoyed reading it. I only hope whoever smuggled it out of Carnivalia doesn't get in caught out or in trouble. I'm also quite curious about the importance of 144 over all. & if it's only due to the time it took The Impresario to gain full control.

Zirra Nova

Indeed no. That's where the colonies come in, largely, and technological innovations are also vastly increasing resource production. The infrastructure is also well-designed and well-maintained. The Factotum is doing a good job.

Somewhat of an aesthetic overlap with Burning Man I see! Curious the sacrifices, if any, needed to maintain such an environment. Can't be light on resource utilization.

The Philosophers are a minor rebel faction within Carnivalia, but they may become more important with time depending on your choices. The primary temporal powers on the light side of the planet at the time of the Hierophant Crisis include the Luxan Orthodoxy, the Carnivalian Empire, and the Zhiran Hierarchy, but there are also religions which wield great power and some shadow powers as well. And then, of course, there's you, and the power you will raise from the dust in the main game.

Benjamin Ludwig

The Kin are long-lived, large-brained, and more intrinsically connected to the land and its fertility than humans, so environmental disregard of the obvious kind will tend to be eschewed by them, even the most imperialistic. But is it possible to build huge cities and factories and still retain not only the health but the spiritual wellness of the land? An excellent question. And trap masters are, ironically, historically likely to fall into their own traps sooner or later, in my experience. Being too clever is a thing. But let's not write off the Impresario as a shallow trickster. It's still a mighty Draak-Kin with a strong soul, and perhaps the Impresario's trap runs several levels deep. I can assure you this won't be a simple as Carnivalia being simply good or bad, or environmentally perfect or heedlessly destructive.

Benjamin Ludwig

Reading the pdf was very interesting. It feels like a mixture of fun fair advertisement and propaganda poster. It was interesting how negatively the Seed and especially the Flower Age were described in comparision to the entries on Razmi and Lozlo. It was mentioned that the pleasure centered approach was inspired by real world experiences. I wonder if the Impresario will fall into the same trap of sacrificing too much of nature in the name of progress and expansion, as real life humanity (and the Tailless on post Great Green Earth) did. It is a master of traps, so perhaps not.

Looks very interesting :) I'm excited to see what other major factions are at play in the world, the mention of Philosophers catches the eye at least. I saw the message in the discord, at first I couldn't believe it was really Vantage, but they have the same eyestripes and head crest-
