33 Bonus - April 2023 - No Blues (Miles Davis)
Added 2023-04-29 13:35:12 +0000 UTCHere are two blues studies of Miles Davis' composition called "No Blues." The first study is for fingerstyle and the second is for flatpicking jazz style. Both exercises play the "No Blues" theme, but the fingerings and positions on the fretboard are quite different. This is because fingerstyle requires a totally different approach to melodies in comparison with flatpicking style.
To get the most out of these two studies, I have marked the fingers of both hands for the fingerstyle guitar. Markings for the left hand are 1, 2, 3, and 4, and for the right hand, they are p, i, m, and a, which stand for thumb (p), index (i), middle (m), and pinky (a). The theme for the fingerstyle is played most of the time with the thumb and index finger, with a few exceptions when you use the middle finger too.
Regarding jazz flatpicking style, in study 2, I marked only the picking because the fingering of the left hand is self-explanatory. Almost all phrases in this study are played with consecutive picking - downstroke, upstroke, downstroke, upstroke, and I always start the phrase with the downstroke, which can be counterintuitive when a phrase starts on an upbeat, but with these positions on the fretboard, it seems natural.
