Hangout tomorrow! (And a question...)

Hello humans of KG Records!

Just wanted to give everyone a quick reminder that we have a Coffee Date hangout tomorrow! This is usually reserved for hedgehogs and up, but I wanted to open it up to everyone this month because I love you :D

Tune in here! (Local time is listed on the event page, and feel free to start posting questions for the Q&A!)

Also, I have a question for you all! I'm starting to think it might be a good idea to move our community chat from Slack over to Discord, and I wanted to get your thoughts on the matter. Patreon can now integrate directly with Discord, so new Patrons would automatically get access to our Discord as part of their membership. As it currently stands, I have to create a new invite link to our Slack channel once a month and update my Patreon thank you message with it... and as most of you know, I tend to forget to do that ALL THE TIME and then the invite link people get in that message is expired). I've also heard from some of you that feel like Slack feels more like work and Discord feels more like a place for communities. I don't personally have any experience with Discord, but I've heard its great?? I think they're both fairly similar in what they provide, but I'd like to open up the discussion to all of you and see if you have any thoughts on the matter. I just want to have the best home for our community and make it as easy as possible to include everyone!

So anyway, take the poll below, and if you have more extended thoughts on the matter, please chime in in the comments!

Either way, I hope to see you at the hangout tomorrow! If you miss it live, you can tune in and watch the recording after the fact :)

Hey I'm new here love Kinas voice and the videos are top notch. Just joined Patreon myself as an artist. Hope everyone has a great day!

I missed the live hangout but watched the replay and I love the part for the songwriting-archeology theory analogy :)

I'm on Slack all the time, so Slack would be awesome.

I love Discord, so I'm a bit biased. It has voice chats which are so much fun. Other creators that I'm Patreon of have a Discord server and we hang out in the voice chat over there at least 2-3 times a week. I love it. I'd recommend you to find a couple of people who are online a lot and make them mods. Just in case some weird people come in. Same could have happened on Slack but never did, so fingers crossed it never happens. But better be safe then sorry. I'm a mod on a discord server myself, so if you need help or anything, let me know! :) Mods can also take over a lot of the work, like setting up new channels, setting up voice chats, etc. If you can only be online like every other week, I would highly recommend that!

Yep, Discord seems like an upgrade in my experience!

Really? I've never used it for games 😂

I don't even have a Slack. But Discord for sure!

normally, I wouldn't mind either way, but the problem is I haven't figured out how to use discord. One of the other creators I support has discord and I have yet to figure it out. I guess it doesn't really matter anyway because I rarely ever use slack anymore. I just found myself being less and less included in the conversations. so I guess it doesn't really matter to me

As far as I can tell they're practically identical, apart from the voice chat feature on Discord. There is some uncertainty as to whether or not we can create custom emojis like on Slack, however. But it's not a deal-breaker 😄 The Patreon>Discord integration sounds good too :) PS! From the little I've used Discord I've also noticed I wasn't able to share files bigger than 8MB :/ It seemed like there was some sort of paid upgrade required, but I'm unsure whether that was on my end or on the person hosting the server.

Should we call our version DisChord? (But never DatChord.)

I also agree that Discord feels more community-focused vs. Slack feeling work-focused. One additional benefit to Discord over Slack is the Instant Voice Chat Channels and easy group calls to facilitate the possible weekly/monthly KG Records "Small Group" therapy that was discussed in the Fall Online Concert stream last time, so it'd be more convenient and more easily accessible than members trying to find out who is interested and organizing a separate Google Hangouts or something. (For reference: this was discussed around the 1:01:30–1:04:00 timestamps in the replay video for October 21, 2018's Fall Online Concert.)

I agree Discord is very gamer heavy. I use it for playing with friends and family, but prioritize Telegram with friends and family when not playing games because it offers a better communication focused interface. Between Slack and Discord I would prefer Slack, but overall I think Telegram is the best. It does everything Slack does but a little simpler and clean.

I'll throw an alternative in and recommend Mighty Networks. It's like running your own social network and all the peeps that I've set it up for are happy. Includes topics, events, paid membership options, courses and you can even have your own KG Records app for it. Don't want this to sound like a sales pitch as there are other options but feel free to email me on rich@generouswork.com if you've got questions.

My only concern for discord (it is a great platform) is that it is heavily game focused -- they have their own game shop, push-to-talk, and an activity page that wants to be my steam launcher). I don't want people missing out just because they see discord is heavily integrated into games and that turns them off. With that said -- there are a couple of "out-of-band" methods to integrate patreon with Slack (zapier and ifttt are two that come to mind) which can do stop-gap integrations while Patreon figures out their own slack integration. I can help build that, so email me if you want to give that a try.
