Plushies & Coronavirus

Need a fun, easy crafts project to do at home while you're self-isolating from COVID-19?

Look no further! On the first week of my sabbati-cation, I found a quick & easy way to design 3D plushies... with Play-Doh & a paper towel‽

🐥 Make Plushie Patterns with Play-Doh & Paper Towels 🐥
(4 min read + downloadable pattern)

Another fun thing to do while self-isolating: going into a room with good sound insulation – like my pantry, which is stocked with 5 jars of rice – and practicing your voice feminization.

Here's 4 more femme voice tests! A 2x2 experiment, Pitch (medium vs high) and Throat Closure (off vs on). Please let me know which voice you feel sounds the least terrible, and for that voice, what I should work on?

🗣 March 12th – 2x2 Femme Voice Test 🗣 (1 min listen)

・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・

Ok, but seriously.

Two days ago, a friend told me they weren't worried about COVID-19, coz the media cried wolf before over Zika and Mad Cow. This frustrated me, because I said the same thing to another friend just two weeks ago.

I believed most news & social media is untrustworthy. I still believe that. The medium favors messages that make you hit Share in a state of panic. WHO even called what's happening on the internet an "infodemic", which is why they've invested so much in a social media strategy – and I applaud them!

Since my "job" is science communication, I want to applaud 3 more highlights of great COVID-19 sci-comm, amidst this infodemic:

(Meanwhile, mainstream news sites are burying "don't wear face masks if you're healthy" in the text, under 100s of photos of people wearing face masks.)

To be honest, I only changed my mind about COVID-19 after seeing level-headed statisticians I trust change their minds, too. These are the kind of people who say the news cries wolf over terrorism and gun violence; alcohol alone kills more Americans per month than 9/11 and the top 10 mass shootings combined. (Gotta say, not the best way to make statisticians not look like cold bastards.)

But now even these cold bastards are saying, COVID-19 is it. This is the wolf. Or at least, a threat worth taking seriously and taking worldwide action now.

The exponential nature of an epidemic means 1% actions we do or don't take today, makes a 1000% difference later. So:

And now, de-stress. Here's a Peep in a cup:

Stay safe, y'all. And let me know what you think of my 2x2 femme voice test, plus any fun plushie designs you want to make!

~ Nicky

Your voices have improved, but it feels like you're still held back by the fear of not sounding feminine enough. Relax! You can do it!! =D

Rev Storm

Ahhh whoops. Thanks for clarifying Rev, I'll try that next time! If you have time, and no worries if not, but what do you think of the 2x2 voice tests above? > sewing myself to try some custom binder approaches That's such a cool use of sewing! Heck ya taking this into our own hands > feels a lot like UV unwrapping Wrapping with paper towels, then literally unwrapping! :D

Re: voices, I think you misunderstood what I was saying last time? It seems like you thought I meant you should work backward from a falsetto, but I was saying the opposite--work from the opposite of a falsetto! See, when you pitch your voice up as high as it goes, you're constricting it. That means you're going to be straining your vocal cords, and vibrating the heck out of them. Instead, go back down to your normal pitch. Then...gurgle! Gurgle as gurgly and wet as you possibly can, as far in the back, *on the opposite side of the vocal cords,* as you can. No vibration. Just wet little baby gurgles. Then, once you fully sound like a baby, try to sound like a tough baby. This is pretty much the exact opposite of a falsetto. Once you've got it down, then practice with raising your pitch! (Of course, you're probably not going to get the sound down perfect at first. That's fine! Try aiming for something like original generation Krang at first. Cartoon voices are pretty easy--right now, the easiest male-passing voice for me is Goofy, and before that, Yoda. Not a proud voice, but a passing voice.) Practice tormenting Shredder yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItUwk77U4Lk (Also, that's an awesome approach for making plushies, thanks for sharing!! I'm trying to get into sewing myself to try some custom binder approaches. I do mess with 3d models sometimes, and this method actually feels a lot like UV unwrapping for applying textures!)

There isn't on Patreon comments, but you can upload an image to https://imgur.com/ for free then post a link!

Is there a way to post a picture here?

Perhaps more tired = less overthinking? Sounds like whatever you decide on, you just need to practice and practice until it becomes second nature. Muscle memory.

Thanks Karen! And actually several months ago I attempted to do Amigurumi (crochet puppets) but it was way over my head so I quit. I still do have the materials though, maybe I oughta take a step down & try regular ol' crocheting...

Nicky Case

Thanks! ^_^ Actually not my first plushie, but is the first 3D one I designed! (rather than used a design made by someone else)

Nicky Case

That does help, thank you! Voice #1, #2, & #4 were all recorded at the same time, but Voice #3 was recorded when I was super tired at night. Ironically, that may have forced me to relax more, and be less strained?

Nicky Case

Huh, I haven't actually even thought about the home-made mask option. I assumed they'd just be useless, so I'm glad you linked me that experimental study showing they're ~half as good as surgical masks, but without risk of hoarding medical supplies. It's a small non-field study, but it is suggestive, so I'll update my belief to just "don't *hoard* face masks". Thanks!

Nicky Case

Thanks so much for the Covid 19 stuff above. Very strong and very reasoned. I was thinking of you the other day, prior to reading your post this morning, and wondering if you've tried knitting or crochet. They are both structural and visual and very malleable. And I just stocked up on wool for potential sel-isolation, since it's now pretty clear we are all going to be at least exposed to this sooner or later.

Karen Cooper

I really don't understand the "Don't wear a face mask" thing. If "flattening the curve" is the goal, then covering everyone's face holes will help with that goal. I understand not hoarding high-quality masks that medical professionals can make better use of, but even a handkerchief across the face helps slow the spread of death droplets. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2440799/

Also, fantastic first plushie!

Aeryn Light

I like #3 and #4 better.

Aeryn Light

I like #3 best I think. It is hard to quantify why. A few observations: #1 sounds sort of "faux young". #2 sounds a little "cartoony"? #4 sounded very careful... like you are working hard to enunciate. As if English was not your first language? They all do scan as feminine to me. Hope this helps.
