Playground shot- Making of

Here is a breakdown of one of the shots from Playground.

I will first do some rough drawings on my sketchbooks to find the framing idea for the shot. If it's a long shot I will do multiple drawings, in this case there is a complex camera movement so I did 4 sketches.

Once I'm happy with them I will time the drawings to do a storyboard /animatic.

In this case I used this initial drawings as a very rough base for me to animate upon. At this point I start simple, just moving circles and lines in perspective. Here I did it by animating in straight ahead, flipping as much as possible between each frame.

OnceI was happy with the ovaral rough I added some shades of gray to test out the lighting of the shot.

Then I will keep on adding details to the rough, using the initial circles and lines as reference to where to add additional detail. The more detail I added the easier it was to track additional ones.

I feel it's very important in animation to start simple and add complexity as you go, It important to start with a solid base and you build upon it.

Here I cleaned the shot, when it's a shot with a lot of movement like ths I will animate in straight ahead. Cleanin one line at a time. Here I did wobly lines around the edges of the frame to have a feeling of speed and blur.

Here I added pink and blue lines that will be used as the edges of the shadows of the rocky walls of the cave. It was quite long to do but not that difficult since I had already animate some rock detail, so I tracked my lines to the already animated detail.

Here is the shot after coloring, I used my colorscript to choose my colors.

Sorry for lack of news from my side! I have been writing for three separate projects and just moved out of my appartment. So it as been quite hectic. But I'm super happy of working in these three projects.

I already talked a bit on other posts about them but I wanted to add more details to where I am at the moment.

As for playground I have been writing and thinking about the project for the following months and I have now almost a final pitch that I will be presenting to different studio companies . I will soon start to do some additional images/ still frames and animations to complete the pitching material. I will share them with you once I start working on it! 

I will be also doing three 1min30 shorts for adultswim smalls, I have been writing and storyboarding on that lately so I will be sharing with you some initial very rough animatics with you.

And the third project is a science fiction one it isn't confirmed yet so we will see, but I'm writing on it hoping it will be done some day!
