The Accursed 90s: The Word

'Vaughan hosts The Word' is one of those 'what if the Nazis won WW2?' notion.

I actually like some of the concepts from The Word - the crowd being annoyed at the host/guests and about to riot, painfully awkward pauses left in, and the "I'll do anything to be on TV'" segment had such disdain for their own audience that I admire it. But....the show. I can't get through an episode. I think they needed a stronger host that was willing to play the straight man. That's right - they needed Johnny Vaughan.

The most unexpected 'morning show' guest for me was my favourite British author-criminologist-occultist, Colin Wilson. He was interviewed by Anne and Nick, and was endlessly patient and polite with them as each of their questions outdid the last in banal arsewittery

When he was touring the UK, Bill Hicks's agent had him doing this and TV-AM as his media promo gigs. That's a very broad audience appeal, I think you'll agree. Also, in his defence, the US talk show circuit pretty much required guest comedians to recite most of their routines instead of having actual conversations.

Thrilled to be compared to Trevor and Simon! I still dine out on Simon recommending me as a #followfriday back in the good old days of Twitter. I did cover Man O Man in a written piece on here, and I've even aquired a bunch of episodes meaning to do a proper video on it, but I'm wary of covering anything from ITV at the moment, because they're being really savage about copyright. https://www.patreon.com/posts/accursed-90s-lad-25203534

You're the Trevor and Simon of 80s/90s-pop-culture-video-essaying strikes again. Almost trotting out a whole roster of 'new' material every week ;-). I'm still burning with ambition that you'll cover Knightmare and Man 'o' Man at some point, one day. At 37 I've only got around 40-50 more years, and I think you're slightly older, so event less for you...
