Ok, you've been waiting long enough! We've been trying to get everything together before announcing it but we think were at the point where we can tell you....But just you. We won't be announcing this publicly for some time...So please keep it under wraps best you can.
We've been on the west coast of the U.S. searching for the next Lazy Gecko...Which we might not actually call the Lazy Gecko in hopes of gaining a bit of confidentiality when we pull into a marina or an anchorage. lol Getting back on track...We've been viewing monohulls and catamarans, quite honestly not being able to decide between the two.
Jeremiah loves the monohulls ability to heel while sailing, the cheaper dockage and a few other items. I love a catamarans ability to fit EVERYTHING in it! Haha...So we decided to view both!
Then came the opportunity to actually sail a catamaran...And not just a day sail. We were on John's Calypso for about 6 weeks in total so we got to truly feel it out. Plus we had some alone time on it which you'll see soon on the videos. It was a unique and rare opportunity to really test the waters.
Jeremiah liked the space and having dual engines...He loves redundancy, that's a huge perk for him. He didn't like the feel while sailing. Not that it was bad...It just wasn't "great"...There's not as much thrill while sailing a cat as opposed to a monohull. That's just a drawback that you can't fix.
I LOVED the space and how comfortable I felt all over the boat...Normally...However, in rough seas (we did a 100 mile crossing in 3-5' seas with an occasional 7...BTW there was a 10' wave mixed in there that day lol) and I felt awful! The movement of a cat just makes me sick when it comes to rough passages.
So, we put it all together and guess what?! Still undecided between a cat and a monohull. Haha...So we kept looking at both...Either way had pros and cons. We found boats we liked but not one we LOVED. This next one is a long term boat for us, so it has to be pretty perfect.
Now, while on Calypso John had made a few comments about keeping her or not. He was questioning if he might want to explore other avenues, something else to do for a while, etc...We joked with him about us taking her. It was just all in fun....For a while.
After some thought he approached us and asked if we were serious about taking Calypso. We really hadn't been serious because of how expensive of a boat she is. She's top of the line when it comes to catamarans. It just wasn't feasible to even consider it. Until he threw a few ideas our way as far as working out a deal.
When we first started sailing Calypso she had a BUNCH of mechanical issues...That was because she'd been a dock queen for about 2 years. Once we got a few bugs worked out and started to exercise the systems she started to purr like the sexy beast she is! Jeremiah and I discussed it and decided a deal might work and we'd be happy on her. So we moved forward with the talks.
As time went on and the deal worked itself out we started to get more excited. "This might actually work out!" I kept telling him. Fast forward a few weeks, meetings with attorneys and accountants to work the deal...and we have one!
As of November 1st, Calypso will be ours and we will be moving aboard. We'll be heading straight to the Bahamas from Florida and sailing south through the Caribbean! We'll possibly head down the coast of South America before we return north and go through the Panama Canal and up the coast to explore Alaska, eventually. We plan to explore everything we can along the way, we're taking you along with us!
As far as feeling sick, we usually don't go out on rough days and when we have gone it was to arrive somewhere by a certain time...Not normally what we do so I don't think it will be a huge issue as I felt fine on less rough days. We just choose to relax at anchor on those days and continue on when the seas calm a bit. 2-3' seas are very comfortable for me.
Between now and then we're enjoying the kids here on the west coast (They're super excited about Calypso btw). We'll be flying to Denver to sign the papers, getting a storage unit for our sentimental items and then driving our butts back across the country to hop on Calypso...We'll be doing a shake down cruise with John before November and so on. Lots going on that we'll be filming for you!
Until then we have a TON of fun stuff still coming your way from our trip on Calypso! So...Welcome home Patrons! Enjoy your new boat!
Love,
Jeremiah and Brittany
