Debut single exclusive - My Selfless Moon

Dear friends,

It's an honour to be able to give you the exclusive airing of the first single to be taken from Restless Lullabies, My Selfless Moon, which is officially released this Friday (17th).

This version you hear before you is pretty much a reflection of how the song began way back in 2006 when I had just released my debut album, Passing Stranger. It was one of the first songs I demoed when I 'got back on the horse' so to speak and started writing again after the heady chaos of that debut release year. I hope you like the vibe!

Keep your eyes peeled for the exclusive play of the video to follow soon.

Bring on the comparison session! It’s an intriguing situation creating an alternate take of the album. I’m very happy they I explored the route. It feels like closure on a chapter now even though this new album hasn’t even been released yet. My curiosity has been appeased now and I can’t wait for you all to hear it 👍🏼

I really like this, including the differences from the New Skin album. I enjoyed that album a lot, though my partner had said she preferred the more traditional style of your other work so it’ll be fun to see whether we both like this one as much / more than that album :-)

Fantastic kit. Great to hear they're still using them in AR. Incredible how they've endured and nobody has been able to touch them since the 50s. My retirement plan includes getting down there with my buddies and doing an album, using all their classic gear, like their Mellotron or even having tinkle on the Penny Lane Steinway. It's like a candy store in there.

Hey thanks Jim! There’s a Fairchild 670 across all the mixes - a real one. Abbey Road have SIX of them! It was like the ‘magic button’ once activated! Glad to hear your feedback bro 👍🏼

Unreal mate! Just played it on the hi-fi. That Abbey Road touch is definitely noticeable. Warm, clean, wide and plenty of space in the hotel room for all the frequencies! That my friend, is sounding lovely jubbly! 🙌🏼😍 Hats off once again 🎩

I can imagine this is how the songs first start out when you’re creating them, before any overlays and further production, like a demo, but obviously a beautifully polished demo or first recording. Perfect for those late summer evenings

Thanks Thelma. Yeah the whole idea of the album is going to play tricks with your head initially I think. I too hear the parts of the original versions. I think once you listen to the whole album you’ll find it travels with its own energy and space and you’ll hopefully be absorbed in that place too

Thanks Liam. Glad to hear you’re feeling the new version. 👍🏼

Haha!!! I prefer marble statue to that alien dude!!! 👽

Cheers Adam. Yeah simplicity was the mantra across the entire record. I think this approach has breathed new life into the synth-laden songs that we know.

Thanks Simon. 🙏🏼

Awww thanks Michael. That’s great to hear. Abbey Road was definitely an icing on the cake moment. We used a Fairchild 670 compressor on all the mixes, which gave all the songs an air of magic. It was like the secret weapon button.

It's hard for me to listen to this without my brain filling out the "space" with all the sounds of the New Skin version. I just loved that album so much! But I'm sure that with time - and with the context of the whole album - I'll get used to this version. It's already beautiful! Can't wait to listen to the other songs!!

Thelma Ribeiro

Very nice version, Scott. I may be responsible for the first 35 listens! It's been included, as yet another Scott Matthews addition, to our wedding playlist 😊

Liam

Also, love the artwork. Like a marble statue, or that big alien chap from Prometheus. :)

Michael Gordon

Agreed, this is a lovely stripped back rendition. Simple, but can hear a lot of effort and love has been put into creating this x

Adam McPherson

Sublime!

I have a MASSIVE smile on my face and tears in my eyes. Not many people can do that, buddy. This is really exceptional! Beautiful balance of all the melodies from backing vox to piano. Abbey Road mix finishing it off too! LOTS OF CLAPPING EMOJIS!
