Phoenix Nights - S2 E1

All my questions have been answered, huzza! If only the rest of life were so simple. Jeehz this font is huge.... not sure when they changed it... also not sure if it is bigger in the posts for you guys, but for me it is huge right now as I type this. It's making me feel so old.... you know, you ever grabbed your gran's phone to help them do something and the text is ginumbus? It's like that, but the text is mine...

You need to react to the outtakes from both seasons. This episode had some great ones, Jim Bowen can't remember a single line!

JR

I know you do mate 🤗 that's why I hate to be an arse leaving load of comments to deal with but get massive FOMO so I'm really torn haha 🙃 Thanks for your patience with me and my bs. I appreciate it. Still very sorry tho 😔🙏

.

You did no such thing silly! Comment as much as you like! I get around to replying when I can🤗

Mandy Cane Lane

.

Is this some kind of rite of passage? 🤔🤪

Mandy Cane Lane

Jereh! 🤣

Mandy Cane Lane

Oh that is brilliant! 🤣Thank you for explaining! 🤗✨️

Mandy Cane Lane

Lol! Bean this Sunday lads 🩵

Mandy Cane Lane

Sunday 13:00 by my clock

Benjamin Taylor-Yates

Could I recommend a little brick hut to put your paper house in?

Benjamin Taylor-Yates

I needed to see what happened next! 🤣

Mandy Cane Lane

Lol! These don't come out early though, right? 😅

Mandy Cane Lane

Lol! If there is a will there is a way! Also, I forgot to mention tornados. Also a big issue and a reason for paper houses 😅

Mandy Cane Lane

I love your reaction to this show, simply to hear Peter Kay’s character (and now yourself), say “Jerry” 🤣

AWR93

Mandy even commented on him, saying something like 'what's that guy holding on the end?' https://cdn.comedy.co.uk/images/library/misc/900x450/c/car_share_sight_gag_08.jpg

John George

First Captain Blackadder then Brian Potter ended up with pigeon feathers on their head!

John George

I was born in '96 so the only reason I know what it is is because of references in shows like this and The Royle Family where they made jokes about it.

JokerDanny

A couple of jokes you missed Mandy: At the start, one of the firemen says something like "The fire was started by a discarded fag." Jerry says "What's happened?" Brian says "Some Queer's burnt the club down, Jerry". Obviously, a play on the two meanings of the slang "fag". When Les (who has now become a butcher) is selling his wares, he says "It's BSE day - Bit of Something Extra". BSE usually refers to Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, aka Mad Cow Disease, a brain-deteriorating disease that swept through British cattle farms in the 90s that was ruinous to the farming industry. The disease jumped to humans in the form of Creutzfeldt Jacob disease. British exports of beef were banned by many countries for a long time since it was possible to become infected by consuming it. Needless to say, it's in extremely bad taste for a butcher to call his promotion "BSE day". Whether Les intended this as a joke or is oblivious and unlucky is another matter. The Ironside thing has been explained elsewhere. 🤗

Tony Mingoia

In every reaction I've seen to this, it's Brits who are familiar with Ironside, and the American reactor isn't. Which is very strange. I suppose it's an age thing, or maybe they just have so many networks over there that some shows just pass them by. 🤷‍♂️

Tony Mingoia

Ironside was an old American crime drama tv show about a detective in a wheelchair who's name was Robert T. Ironside. It was popular over here in the UK.

JokerDanny

10:55 Don't know if anyone has mentioned it Mandy, but the actor who plays Kenny is the guy from Car Share who Kayleigh asks "are you a keen dogger". Also Brian did have a wife called Jean, he has mentioned her before but he is a widower so hence the wedding ring.

JokerDanny

The flowers for "Alan" next to the Blackpool tram line are a reference to a character from the soap opera Coronation Street, who was hit and killed by the Blackpool tram on the date shown there. It was a major storyline in the UK's most popular soap opera. If I remember correctly, "Alan" was an unpleasant, abusive character, so don't feel too bad for him. Oh, and Ironside was a 70s US crime drama where the lead character was in a wheelchair.

Jason Webb

Oh Josh has to watch everything because you never know when there will be a random Kitana cameo. 😛🤣

So the brewery provides alcohol for the on-tap beers in barrels and kegs and all that traditional stuff in exchange for a cut. I think some of them will inject cash or buy a share of the pubs too, maybe even own them, so the brewery is a big part of the pub industry here. Definitely helps to have them on side. The license is different tho and is a license to sell alcohol and allow it to be consumed on site . Off-license stores exist - you might call it a liquor store - you can purchase there but aren't allowed to drink on the premises tho.

.

Yay for you getting to see "Spit the Dog" lol. 🤗 Speaking of coincidences - It's eerie that you paused on a shot of Blackpool promenade to talk about the smell of raw sewage. And that's all I'll say on that. Way too many hidden references for you in this.. but the RIP sign was a reference to a soap opera which had a notorious scene where a character was hit by one of those electric trams.

.

And man, even a load of paper is heavy. I guess you wouldn't want to be on the bottom floor whatever happens, right. But aren't you sacrificing structural integrity making it out of flimsier materials and making it more likely to fall on you? Bricks are useful to us for insulating too, another reason you guys probably don't want to use them.

.

We apparently had an earthquake a few years back in the north but it was due to fracking for gas I think. And several tremors or mini quakes since were blamed on similar things. I remember hearing it but thought that it was a plane flying over. Was surprised to hear that we'd had a quake the next day. I don't think that we've had any natural ones that I can recall - not noticeable on surface level anyhow. How about your weather Mandy? Do you ever get any of that nasty tropical stuff like North America does from all that heat you get there? Some of us might see a little snow this week 🥺

.

It's a Sunday let him off. 🤣

Benjamin Taylor-Yates

I don’t think I understood the logic of wooden houses being beneficial in an earthquake 😂 We’ve had minor quakes, but I don’t remember the US having anything major for a long time. There’s obviously a major fault line on the west coast but I’m not sure about the rest of the country. The US does have billions of trees though, which is why the timber trade is massive (also the worlds 2nd largest exporter of wood according to google).

Julian T

It’s lined up perfectly now.. Mandy has 5 episodes left of Phoenix Nights and 5 episodes left of Bean!

AWR93

Philomena Cunk is awsome. I never watched it until Mandy started.

Josh Read

You don’t get how Jerry will end up being a fall guy? Well you’re about to find out Mandy my dear 😂

Jonathan Davies

100% remember singing this in high school and annoying the shit out of my teachers 😂

Jonathan Davies

What if you walked into a supermarket and they were singing a song specifically about you Mandy? A specific song to get you to buy Washington up liquid? 😂

Jonathan Davies

I’ve never thought of the UK as “a country that likes to show off its bricks” 😂 I guess we really are the 3rd little piggy who’s house the wolf couldn’t blow down 🤣🤣🤣

Jonathan Davies

My first girlfriend was from Northern England, she always used to randomly sing "COME GET YOUR BLACK BIN BAGS", I remember now that its from this episode.

Yoshua Simoleit

Bob Carolgees and Spit the dog - there are a couple of road sign references to them in Car Share.

Hypnobob

Because she's been busy and she wanted to watch 1 or 2 Philomena cunk which by the way is hilarious

Remi

Sorry to hear about your smelly supermarket and lack of employment opportunities. Although, someone has to work in that supermarket so how can both things be true?

Jeffrey44

I like to see people reacting to things I enjoy, to see what they think of them. If I have no interest in what they are watching, where is my focus gonna be?

Danny

20:40 you never told us your brother was British 🤣 Hung over frying sausage bacon egg and mushroom at 3 in the morning

Remi

The Asian elders bus which confused you is real, it used to come and pick up one of my neighbours mother.

Stuart

There was an earthquake that was strong enough to wake me up about 15 years ago. They don't cause damage though.

Stuart

You guys really like to show off your bricks 🤣 Im either really dirty minded or really stupid

Remi

No we don't have earthquakes really, but we use bricks to protect us from wolves. No that fireman looks absolutely nothing like Dobby. Have you been drinking or bumped your head? What has happened to your pink pencil? What made ypu say "oh no" at the end? Ironside was a police show from the 60s and 70s where the detective is in a wheelchair.

Josh Read

Max and Paddy jokingly (mockingly?) refer to Brian Potter as 'Ironside' due to his wheelchair. Ironside was an American crime show about a wheelchair bound San Francisco detective named Robert Ironside. It ran for 8 seasons from 1967-1975.

Jonathan Pettitt

Don't you watch Mandy's reactions for Mandy and not what she watches?

Josh Read

Have you been watching The Blackadders? Mr Bean is in that.

Jeffrey44

Benjamin Taylor-Yates has eaten your breakfast, Joshyboiiiiii. You're going to have to start getting up earlier.

Jeffrey44

I was hoping for Mr Bean! 😭😭😭 it's been like 6 weeks since the last one and the next episode is one of the best and most famous episodes too 😭😭😭

Danny

Another Phoenix? You do spoil us rotten, Mandy. Thanks.

.

I'm losing it 🫣

Joshyboiiiiii

🥇 Text looks fine to me. Today's fumble "Coincicdinciz" 🤪 Bricks Vs wood house. Well, in states they have wood and concrete. Cheaper sure, but they need maintenance. Wood rots and concrete crumbles. Bricks can stand for centuries once they've set. They're better in fires, cos concrete can get air gaps and explode, and wood well, you've not got any time to get out before the whole lot goes up. Quakes, tho common are not as common as fires. I'll take my chances with brick. 👌 It's pretty common practice for businesses in UK now to have owners who aren't necessarily the license owners. Mostly transport, small shops or pubs. Doesn't matter where in the world you go, there's always businesses walking the line. I know my old man's ex boss got done for his wagon driver infringements. So he just got his wife an O-license and carried in with the same name.
