Fawlty Towers - S2 E5 - The Anniversary

Comments

Some say that's where the devil is too! Wooooooooo๐Ÿ‘น I used to think I had an eye for details. You have to when sculpting. But you got me beat! ๐Ÿ‘

Stevus

Hahaha, ya silly goose! I just love details! Some of the best bits of life are hidden in the details. Glad to see you back! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿปโœจ๏ธ๐Ÿฉต

Mandy Cane Lane

Yo, I've watched these shows MANY times over the years and I don't recall EVER having seen those boom mics you keep spotting. I've considered some explanations which didn't really pass the sniff test, like you're using some kind of computer hack that detects boom mics, or you're randomly claiming to see one at an arbitrary moment, then adding one in during editing. If I assume that the most likely explanation is that you just spotted them using your keen senses and deft observation skills then I would LOVE to see the results of one of those eye tracking software programs to see how you scan the show. There could be something superhuman going on there. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Stevus

Weโ€™d have our work cut out for us in the comments, explaining some of the cultural references!

John George

She has confirmed that Noel's House Party is on the list.

Jeffrey44

It's quite exciting not knowing what you're going to pick, lol!

John George

Very on brand though ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Mandy Cane Lane

Ah yes, very interesting John! I will consider it as I have not decided yet ๐Ÿ˜…. Father Ted is most definitely on my list though! ๐Ÿค—โœจ๏ธ

Mandy Cane Lane

HAHAHHAHA! I will have you know Benji, I do not where floral prints. ๐Ÿคฃ I never had Paella either and wouldn't want to try ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Mandy Cane Lane

Well that ratio (11/12) is still amazing though! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿปโœจ๏ธ

Mandy Cane Lane

Haha! Brilliant :-) The scene in the lingerie department was a bit risquรฉ as well!

John George

The language though. It's a bit much for me, Father Ted. "Feck this" and "Feck that". "You big bastard." Dreadful Language. "You big hairy arse." "You big Fecker." Fierce Stuff! And of course the F-word, the bad F-word. Worse then Feck. You know the one I mean. "Eff you" "Eff your effing wife" I don't know why they have to use language like that. "I'll stick this effing pitch up your hole" That was another one. "Bastard this" and "Bastard that". You can't move for the Bastards. It's wall-to-wall bastards. "You Bastard" "You Fecker" "You bollocks! Get your bollocks out of my face." "Ride me sideways" was another one.

Jeffrey44

I do love how I pick up something new every time I watch an episode - like I never really appreciated before how Basil is only planning a surprise party to make Sybil look foolish and get back at her for the previous year.

Danel4d

With this and Car Share coming to an end I really think you should try Father Ted. It's exactly the same humour as The IT Crowd, really upbeat and wacky. It has no cringe, no bodily functions, no awkward sex scenes. Its the complete opposite to Peep Show which is about to get a bit, well...

John George

Sure I understand, if you can remember to check ๐Ÿคญ you can feel free to let me know at any time ๐Ÿคœ๐Ÿค›

.

Probably has a special one for being tall enough to ride the roller coaster. ๐Ÿ˜†

.

I'm going to hell for this: but I couldnt stoy myself laughing at how the sign that says "flowery twats" is pointed right at Mandy ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ. Sorry Mandy. Never had a Paella ๐Ÿฅ˜. Wonder what they're like.

Benjamin Taylor-Yates

Right? How did that even happen?

Mandy Cane Lane

I have vorn vigs!

Ooooh ๐Ÿ˜

Rusty Dog

Maybe some do although I know a few who have reached milestones and they just have a "date night". I always think a wedding anniversary is a personal celebration for the married couple - just seems odd involving other people. That's just my personal opinion though. ๐Ÿ™‚ I also don't believe Basil would bother with a grand gesture like that. Seems very out of character. If he's got that kind of generosity in him (which I sincerely doubt), then the pretending he's forgotten bit is an odd lead in. He could quietly acknowledge their anniversary and still surprise her with friends arriving. Haha, sorry Mandy! I agree that as always it definitely had funny moments, but this one isn't for me - a shame; the only episode of all 12 that I don't care for. The other 11 are fantastic! ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜Ž

Ash Jeffries

Hmmm.... perhapsly... ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿคช

Mandy Cane Lane

Hahaha, it was Jeffrey that told me about them! Can't help it now ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคช

Mandy Cane Lane

Of course Paul! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿปโœจ๏ธ Will take a few days for the change to happen ๐Ÿค—

Mandy Cane Lane

๐Ÿคญ What a coincidence!

Mandy Cane Lane

Well, apparently when people get to "big number anniversarys" 10, 15, 20, etc, they often celebrate it with friends and family, I also believe that inviting friends was a grand gesture from Basil's part thinking Sybil would like it. Either way I understand all your points and they are all fair. Still had funny moments though!

Mandy Cane Lane

Oh thank you Stanley!! That is very much appreciated and I will keep it in mind! At the moment I can't remember what I have and what I would like to have. ๐Ÿ˜… Very cool of you! ๐Ÿค—โœจ๏ธ

Mandy Cane Lane

HAHAHAHHAHAHA!!! That is both hilarious and very accurate probably ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Mandy Cane Lane

Oh what a good idea!! I have seen it when I was about 7 and remember loving it! I remember nothing though, so would be cool. Thank you Julian! ๐Ÿค—โœจ๏ธ

Mandy Cane Lane

Really? Is that how her career got started? That is so interesting!

Mandy Cane Lane

I just can't do cringe very well and like you said I hate people who don't take no for an answer the first time

Remi

Up my what Josh? ๐Ÿคจ๐Ÿ˜‘

Mandy Cane Lane

Lol, I was more mad about the American guy episode ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…

Mandy Cane Lane

Hmm... I know that there were a lot of things cropped from the sides, not sure about the top and bottom though. I do know that when Friends was released on streaming services fans caught several things off to the sides that were never seen before due to the cropping such as crash mats and stand ins. ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿคฃ

Mandy Cane Lane

Hahahaha! Maybe she has a different height for each day! ๐Ÿคช

Mandy Cane Lane

Hahaha! That "divorce" thing is from Friends. Just kinda stuck with me! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ Have you vorn vigs?

Mandy Cane Lane

Canโ€™t believe thereโ€™s only 1 episode left ๐Ÿ˜ข that went by too quick!

AWR93

Hahahaha! The best thing is that he was right the whole time! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Mandy Cane Lane

Basil guiding Sybil throught the kitchen and shoving her in the cupboard (which was strangely empty) was both funny and satisfying. :) Poor Manuel and his paella. Roger was a right pain in the back end. One more to go..nooooo! Derek on stand-by? :)

Rusty Dog

It's Mandy's keen eye that I sometimes rely on for the XFM's :) I'm glad she has it.

Rusty Dog

In many ways, Roger was the forerunner to today's internet comments section smartarses ๐Ÿ˜„ also you have the best eagle eyed boom mic-spotting skills I have ever seen, I have seen Fawlty Towers from start to finish at least 6 times and never seen one!

DriveIn

Hi Mand, Could you please remove my name from the outro's of future vids as that goes out publicly on You Tube too when you trim them down and what not when they get posted on there. Thank you :)

Paul Elsby

Tell me he doesn't look like the type of guy to smoke bath salts

Remi

She go ccrazy *manuel voice*

AWR93

Excuse me, the song that Bas sings briefly in this episode is the same song that German Mr Bean sings in a recent video you watched on YouTube.

Jeffrey44

I don't really think such nonsense. I just want to see if Mandy will go crazy ๐Ÿคช

Josh Read

Josh, you're a braver man than me, pal.๐Ÿ˜ฏ

.

I prefer the term "shit stirrer"

Danny

The documentary "Her Masters Voice" about her and what she does with those dummies is bloody excellent. Funny and moving.

Jeffrey44

Also if you ever see lines running along the very top edge of the picture on old shows that's where they hid the closed caption data but it often shows up now on modern screen ratios.

.

A squirrel? I think it's you that might have eaten too many drugs. A squirrel?

Jeffrey44

Great reaction, Mandy. I love every episode of this show....apart from this one. For me, the entire premise doesn't work and they stretch it out beyond belief. - Basil pretending he's forgotten is fine and I get that he's trying to make up for genuinely forgetting the previous year, but why would he have invited 6 friends over for such an occasion? He isn't really a people/friends kind of person and anniversaries are only really ever the concern of people in the relationship itself. No one else cares. - You said it yourself, Mandy - Basil may be a liar, but this lie makes zero sense and there's just no need. He pretended he'd forgotten and she stormed off. Surely that is easier than the farce that Basil had to create to avoid telling the truth? - Like you also said, Mandy, Sybil could easily have walked back in at any moment...and did. Why build up the story when it is so easily debunked? - Easily the most aggravating aspect of the episode is how insistent everyone is on seeing Sybil when they really wouldn't be. I get they need to be for the awkwardness and....erm.....the plot.... but it just makes no sense. If Sybil is genuinely ill and asleep upstairs, they'd leave her the heck alone. They wouldn't insist on seeing her. They'd politely sit and have a drink with Basil and maybe make excuses to leave early - citing traffic or something - if they all secretly only give Basil the time of day because of Sybil. They're both pretty awful people so I don't have a preference, haha. Roger calling BS from the outset and his regular swipes did work though and were actually funny. It was so much more believable than the interrogation the others gave Basil. It's a shame because Fawlty Towers really is exemplary and it's hard to find fault with much of it at all. For any other sitcom, The Anniversary would be a solid effort. For this show, it almost felt like filler. Like they had run out of ideas. Some of it was unusually half baked and not thought through. Very good in parts still though and always nice to see Polly more involved.

Ash Jeffries

Mandy, could I drop a semi-random question in? So, recently back in the last poll thread you mentioned how your options were limited due to what you had currently available. And it had me wondering; and with another show soon coming to an end it feels a little relevant again. You probably already have a system in place, and I do see people dropping extra links and helping out with the odd clip here and there, but.. is there a particular show on your list that you don't have access to but would love to be able to include in the next poll? I think if one of us doesn't have it already then we could probably find a source for you legally; for educational and critique purposes under fair use (US) fair dealing (UK) and fair dinkum (AU). ๐Ÿคช I enjoy the cringe reactions as much as the next man don't get me wrong. And I get that a show probably wouldn't appear on the poll if it was something you didn't want to see. But it's genuinely delightful to see you reacting to something you really enjoy and are invested in too. Like for instance Karl, that recent Whose Line clip, and Car Share. ๐Ÿค— If I start sending links though I'm probably going to be influenced by my own biases. Anyway this is just a long-winded way of saying there's an extra offer on the table if you ever need an assist with finding anything. Even if it's just selfishly to save you some time so you have more free to make extra stuff for us. It's a win/win so it'll be nae bother.

.

lol I can't help but think if you ever made it over there to England you will just spend your time admiring how tall everyone is.

Mike M

Hi Mandy this is a random suggestion in a random place. Have you seen the movie Airplane? If you havenโ€™t then I recommend it for a reaction. Itโ€™s not British but itโ€™s the same type of wacky comedy youโ€™re used to.

Ken Campbell, who played Roger, was at one point in a relationship with Nina Conti when she was less than half his age. He left her his collection of ventriloquist dummies when he died.

Jason Webb

Up yours Mandy ๐Ÿฅ‚ In a few years I reckon you will be able to become a Sybil lookalike ๐Ÿค— the likeness is uncanny. Also your boom spotting skills are incredible. I've never noticed most of them ๐Ÿ™Œ

Josh Read

This episode pissed me off ๐Ÿคฃ Mince meaning minced meat normally beef Basil brush was a reference to an old children's TV puppet who was a squirrel very iratating and as an adult looking back at it basil brush had a drug problem

Remi

Glad to hear I might not have dreamt that ๐Ÿ˜ƒ. Would have been funny if they drew in the occasional boom microphone, or showed the odd cameraman in a mirror, on the Simpsons from time to time. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Gary Tamblyn

You could be right, Gary. This happened to The Simpsons; they cropped and zoomed in so as not to have black bars at either side of the screen on more modern TVs. This resulted in losing about 25% of the original picture. It was something like that, I know a lot of people were not happy.

๐‘ญ๐’†๐’Š๐’”๐’•๐’š ๐‘บ๐’•๐’†๐’—๐’†

Great reaction Mandy ๐Ÿค— Poor Basil, starts with a small lie, then just digs himself into a deep crater. Youโ€™re good at spotting the boom microphones, I keep missing them. ๐ŸŽค๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ‘€. Iโ€™m not sure how true it is, but I have heard the top of the screens used to be cropped for old TVs. However with the advent of higher definition screens and converting for widescreen, I think they just re-framed the episodes to show the parts that were originally hidden. I might have got that wrong, and they were actually just rubbish at keeping them out of shot. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Gary Tamblyn

They didn't have trolls in those days. He must be something else. How about a general mischief maker, does that sound right?

Jeffrey44

Thanks, Mandy โ˜๏ธโ›…๐ŸŒค๏ธ๐ŸŒž The wigs may not be the same as you said yourself her hair is getting bigger they could be the same style in different lengths.

.

I remember the split dye hairstyle, I'm still waiting for the wide parting to return. I love it when you add your own drama to shows like '*gasps* divorce, can you imagine?'๐Ÿ˜‚ Do you vear vigs? She vore vigs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xqEABqaEuo Anyway, fantastic reaction as always, thank you, Mandy.๐Ÿค—๐Ÿค—
