The shirts in the audience are references to comedies with basically the same formula as his. He was sad at the end because he saw Maggie's face and realized he's sold out and lost her respect. I think it's the fact that even Maggie his best friend who isn't the brightest was struggling to laugh.

Small problem with this one imo. In the last episode maggie had a poster of orlando bloom in her bedroom but I tell myself she got it free and just put it up.

So cool that Ricky actually stuck to his guns and made 2 shows out of the experience! π

The character of Andy is trying to make "The Office" but pressure for broad comedy has ruined it. Ricky of course did stick to his idea and was prepared to walk away if they didn't do it the way he wanted, this is what would have happened to that show if he'd given in to the pressure.

Surely a wreath is only 'flowers' if it's made of flowers? A laurel wreath is definitely not flowers. PEDANTIC MAN TO THE RESCUUUUUE!!!

Those slogans on the audience t-shirts were from various comedies or personalities of the time. Wassup from the Budweiser ads, Am I Bovvered? From Catherine Tate, Garlic Bread from Peter Kay, I'm A Lady from Little Britain and It's Chico Time from an X Factor contestant called Chico who was popular for about 8 minutes in the mid 2000s lol.

Romesh ain't white, I know that. π
Also the country you were born in, isn't necessarily the nationality that you are.
I was born in what was West Germany but I am 100% British.

If I recall it aired during some sort of "naturist week" on channel 5 alongside some documentaries, it was the 50th anniversary of the start of naturists in the UK. All the contestants were naturists. Prior to this Keith Chegwin was doing family friendly game shows π¬ so was very weird him randomly being naked on an adult game show. Much like how Patrick Stewart said, you saw everything πΆ

Richard is both black and Norwegian, his mother is Norwegian and his father is Nigerian but Richard was born in London so he's British. Romesh isn't black he's British-Sri Lankan Hindu.

Thank you Rusty! And I actually did think of Richard but I wasn't sure if he counted because I remember hearing he was Norwegian and thought maybe he is just a lovely color but not black. And Romesh I believe is Indian so don't think that counts either π€·π»ββοΈ

Hey Mandy! Newbie here! Loved your YouTube content for a while so had to check out your Patreon!
You are the third person I've seen react to Extras and your reactions to it might be my favourite of all! You pick up on so many details and nuances and are so intuitive. You seem to get Ricky and Steve's intentions as writers.
I particularly love how instantly you warmed to Maggie as I did too! She isn't overly sharp and often puts her foot in her mouth, but she is the sweetest, kindest, most well-meaning person and that's what I see above everything else.
Loving some of your other reactions on here too - love a good panel show like WILTY or Cats Does Countdown! We have so many brilliant comedians in the UK and the panel show format really shows that off!
Look forward to watching more and I'm sure you'll love the rest of Extras too. As many have already mentioned, the Christmas Special/Finale is particularly strong. This show ends so well. π

Funny British black guy... I'm surprised you didn't remember Richard Ayode (although he's not my cup of tea). Maybe Romesh Ranganathan?
Yeah Maggie knew that the sitcom wasn't what Andy wanted to do, which is why she had that expression. They know each other very well.
Man, the cringy scenes with Maggie and that woman. Exaggerating (or not) the personalities of some big-headed people in show business.
So that woman's expression when Orlando Bloom demanded a kiss from Maggie was great. A kind of karma being visited on her for all the nasty things she said. Made her jealous.
Great reaction and episode.

Yeah I mentioned this before about how Ricky's pitching of this show was akin to how he pitched The Office to the BBC. Basically he wanted full freedom of control or he and Steve were prepared to walk away.

Yeah, I had heard of Gervais prior to The Office but he was far from being well known, The first time I heard him was in the late 90's doing little bits on Mary Anne Hobbs's Radio 1 show, just these pre-recorded pieces with him and Stephen Merchant talking nonsense with each other. Very funny though.

Keith Chegwin famously hosted a one off bizarre gameshow called "Naked Jungle", he was completely naked whilst naked teams of contestants did various Fort Boyard like tasks on a jungle themed set. You only won about 5 grand to share too. Saying that Keith Chegwin being naked on national television was an extremely unflattering look, would be understatement π¬

Also, its funny that Maggie was saying she didnt like Orlando Bloom yet in the previous episode she has a poster of him on her wall π
. I believe they originally wanted Leonardo DiCaprio for this episode and then went for Jude Law who also turned them down, thats also why they put the big billboard poster of Jude Law in Alfie at the end of the last episode, as he turned them down as he was doing that film instead which bombed big time and was universally panned

When they are trying to name a black British comedian, it cuts to a black mans picture on the wall that Ricky looks at and carrys on thinking. The man in the picture is British comedian Sir Lenny Henry, who Ricky has always poked fun at for not being good. He pretty much made a career out of playing silly characters in skits

I think luckily for Ricky he had stocked up just enough credibility as a sketch comedy writer, which Andy doesnβt have, that he could be more persuasive to keep The Office the kind of show he wanted, though Iβm sure it was a struggle.

When Ricky and Steve wrote The Office, they were very specific that they didn't want the BBC to turn it in to a cheesy studio sitcom. In this series of Extras they're kind of exploring what could have happened to Ricky had he lost control of the show. Ricky wasn't an extra, but he wasn't famous before he played David Brent.

Regarding what you said at the end, Andy wasn't *really* happy about the idea of making lowest common denominator comedy that people enjoyed, he just said that to Maggie to try and convince both Maggie and himself that that's what he felt. Hence why he looked so depressed. And Maggie had that expression on her face because she knows Andy so well that she could tell how he was feeling. She wasn't fooled by what he said to her before the taping and she knew he was upset about having to sell out his vision and make something he wasn't proud of, so she was just (silently) expressing sympathy for him.
