2023-06-25 12:35:22 +0000 UTCIt's interesting to note the film highlights a few of the theories that were prevalent at the time (1969) such as it was an accidental bombing of London that causes the Germans to ultimately switch to a losing tactic, or the the BoB was a close run thing or even that if Britain had lost it was certain to be successfully invaded, While not negating the importance (very) and sacrifices of all involved history shows that 1/ It wasn't that close, the RAF had more pilots and aircraft at the end than when they started, 2/ the tactic change was because of impatience and the 3/ Royal Navy would have crushed any invasion before they even landed a boat. Look for "most dangerous enemy" by steven Bungay for what many regard as the definitive history of it . TLDR Britain had the worlds first fully integrated air defence system and the Luftwaffe got impaled on it. For a American perspective of the London blitz look up "london can take it, " it's a 9 min film made at the time for US audiences.

2023-06-24 20:04:27 +0000 UTCGreat reaction from you guys. As someone else has already pointed out the few flaws with this version all I'll say is a) not your fault and b) still thoroughly enjoyed your reaction. The problem I have with this being remade is that it would be all CGI whereas with this film all the planes flying where real and it showed. A few recommendations I would like to suggest in this area are maybe 'The Dambusters', 'The First of the Few' (1942) (US title Spitfire) which is about how the Spitfire came into being and, of course, 'A Bridge too Far'. Another one I don't know if anyone has mentioned is 'I Was Monty's Double' (1958). Based on the true story of actor M. E. Clifton-James who, as the title suggests, pretended to be General Montgomery near D-Day. He actually plays himself in the film. It's not an all action film but I like it due to the true story aspect.

2023-06-24 14:50:23 +0000 UTCThis was a very strange version. They'd edited out the footage from the actual WWII planes, the subtitles for the Germans were missing and they'd definitely removed some language and I think some scenes maybe. I think the "love" story is in there to show you the effects that the war had on relationships, that women were gaining independence and didn't want to be ordered about by their husbands anymore but also you see how Maggie reacted to the burnt commanding officer and then to find out her husband, who she's already feeling estranged from, is badly burned and she HAS to be posted to be near him. It's all a lot deeper than a simple love story. The little bit of Benjamin Britten's score that they used for the huge dog fight is so incredible. I'm so happy you appreciated it. It's such a terrible shame they didn't use his score for the entire film.
