My friends, this is that moment where every component of the model turns into a model on its own.
The window was a small project, and the second floor was quite a lot of work!
What I find funny (and fun) is the randomness and chaotic nature of each plank - I chose the wooden upper floor as the demo subject for the video (the rest was done off-camera), but I quickly realized that there's no universal step by step guide for painting old wood, it all depends on the effect you're aiming for and the references you're working with! I'd say the most common technique is the chipping fluid applied with a brush, and the acrylics applied on top of it, but even that isn't always the case. For example, the smaller plywood sheet on the improvised door at the top is painted with acrylic washes, with no chipping.
Also, it didn't help that I initially decided to add chipped red paint on that large wooden section, only to realize it contrasts terribly with the brick wall. I considered a complete repaint, but luckily, I was able to cover it up with chipped green paint. But if I were painting it again, I'd leave it in a raw, faded wood finish.
The advertising sign was a small journey as well. Initially, I wanted to paint an ad for some ancient product, but then realized it would be more fitting to advertise the purpose of the building! So I googled for a while and found a good advert for a bike repair shop, and used that as a template. Oh, and yeah, the advert is also painted with brushes using a hand-cut paper stencil.
Another cool little detail I tried for the first time are the painted glass panels in the windows. It was a pretty common practice, and the effect looks very cool. Just a layer of chipping fluid from the inside of the glass and you can go to town with the effect. I also simulated some taped cracks in the glass, but the tape isn't as noticeable as I wanted!
Anyway, right now I just need to finish the lamp and the groundwork!
I'm sorry for not dropping an update sooner, but these elements required a lot of time and there have been some other unexpected duties outside the modelling studio!
