Dustify!

My friends, I had to take a break from my workbench session to show you this mid-stage progress on the earth tones. You know I'm probably the last guy who'd blow his own trumpet, but this time I'm so satisfied because I feel like this is some pretty fine pre-dusting. At least personally I consider it the first airbrushed dust where I don't feel like "omigosh better fix this up real quick with enamels and stuff so it doesn't look like crap" 😁

Maybe it's the extra practice with the airbrush, but in this particular case I simply prepared the pre-dusting mixture by pouring a bit of Mr. Leveling Thinner into the airbrush cup and then I kept adding small amounts of Tamiya Buff with a paintbrush. Kept test-spraying and adding paint until the mixture was not too translucent, didn't sputter and it could be easily built up in layers.

Sometimes the paint and thinner can separate in the airbrush, especially when you're spraying for quite some time (say 2 hours) and suddenly you'll start spraying more thinner than paint. This happened on the gun barrel - you can see how glossy it is. I was basically blasting it with colored thinner and it left a shiny finish, but I knocked it down shortly after taking those pics (the surface was still wet, lol).

I think the effect looks WAY better on the hull than the turret, but this might be due to its complex and random shapes. Anyhoo, textures are in place, so is the loose debris, and so is the pre-dusting. Let's now turn the 720p finish to 4K with enamels 😁

PS: yeah, it felt good not to be afraid of ruining a super subtle post-shaded finish 😁
